The chains of events during this night were terrible. Just like they planned, Elena fooled Stefan that she's drunk and distracted him before Alaric attacked him with two projectiles that hit him in his back and he lost consciousness.
Afterward, when Elena entered the car with unconscious Stefan laying in the backseat, Vicki Donovan, as a ghost, ignited the car and it started to go up in flames.
