Sucks for you!

you sound very happy right now

you should not be happy

you should be crying in despair on my behalf.

Nah, that doesn't really sound like me at all

Merry Christmas, by the way, if you celebrate it

ah yes, I do

Happy New Year to you also

Why, thank you

Got any plans for the holidays?

i'm going home to see my parents and my brother

please tell me you're staying in New York.

I'm leaving for LA on the twenty-fourth and driving from LAX to Pasadena

Dude, this actually sucks

i know.

It's been what – three months?

Eleven weeks

My God, you're a dork.

When do you land in New York?

the twenty-fourth – same day you leave.

maybe we'll run into each other at the airport?

I wouldn't know it was you

Come on, send me a picture of your face, so I can at least place one with a voice.

i'd rather have the element of surprise when we meet for the first time.

I'm not saying that's dumb, but it's totally dumb.

You know what?

I'm gonna send you my face.

That way at least one of us recognizes the other.

you seriously want to do that?

I do. I will. I'm sending it.

The notification pops up on his phone. He swipes to unlock it, his heart beating a million beats per second. He doesn't know why he's so nervous. He knows Kat – well, as much as he possibly can in almost three months.

His phone is taking extraordinarily long to download the photo, and his hands are getting slippery. He drops his phone on his bed, quickly wiping his hands on his jeans. When he picks his phone up, the photo has downloaded, and he is breathless.

He knew she would be pretty, but he didn't count on how beautiful she actually is. Her curly hair, dark and shoulder-length, frames a small face with bright eyes the colour of grass. He takes in her dainty nose and caramel skin and smiling, pink lips, and he wishes they weren't so far apart. He wishes that he had the courage to send her a picture of himself, so she might think about him as she's falling asleep, the way he thinks about her. He wishes he had the courage so she would picture him in the middle of a boring lecture.

He touches his fingers to the screen, the pads of his index and middle finger touching her lips. He wishes he could send her a picture of him, so that she might think about kissing him, the way he can't stop thinking about kissing her.

His fingers hover over the keyboard as he thinks about what to say, what he could possibly say in response to her.

you are quite possibly the most beautiful girl I've ever seen
