Next day Lan Wangji woke before the usual Gusu Lan time, he had been woken by a sudden itch in his mind.
He decided to go to the Cold Spring to calm his nerves and maybe his heart.
He took his  qin with him too, it had been a habit of him after the first siege of Burial Mounds, but apart from that he remembered playing with Wei Ying their song Wangxian just before wei ying left cloud recesses, just before he— Lan Wangji stops that train of thought before it can go ahead. He picks up the qin, takes a set of robes and heads towards the springs.

He mediates for a while in the spring and then takes a bath, letting the scars at his back a chance to maybe heal more than they had. He knows they would never fade, and sometimes they hurt too much, so much that even a twitch in his shoulder muscles feels like he is lying on hot coal coated with salt.
After sometime, his thoughts once again drift towards him, he remembers the second time when Wei Ying saw him in the cold spring, saw the scars on his back and the went brand on his chest just beside his heart.

The look of horror and shock on his face which gradually changed into a look of anger quickly was.....indescribable. Lan Wangj couldn't and still cannot understand the meaning of that look, how Wei Ying scanned him from top to bottom as if scrutinizing and searching for any other hidden wounds or scars had made him feel too much exposed.
He had felt naked, ashamed and guilty .

Before Wei Ying asked about the scars he was scared, what if Wei Ying thought his actions were hilarious or unwanted? What if he mocked him for his actions and deeds but when he did asked, there was only open concern in his voice and oh how lan wangji has missed that concern filled voice from the xuanwu cave, but that didn't mean he was ready to tell him yet. A small smile came to his lips, crack.
Lan Wangji whirled around and his eyes snapped open. He darted his eyes all around the area searching and listening for even a rustle of leaves but all was quiet. Was someone spying on him? But that was impossible, the area was in the part of back mountains of Cloud Recesses and thus protected by ancient talisman and wards. After taking one more look around he got out of the spring and doned his robes and and went to the waterfalls. The falls was a place he had with some of the best moments, and the background was a silent companion to his strum of guqin.

With  practical flourish he settled on a rock and stormed the first note of a song which thousands of  words he wished to, but never had the courage to actually speak. And thus he played, pouring his heart and soul in the song while a gentle breeze started as if willing to carry the tunes and melody to its destination. He played with the sound of Wangxian woke the nature surrounding him, with this song woke the back mountains of cloud ressecces.

The day went on smoothly, he put the letter to be delivered, took classes, discussed matters with his uncle and worried about his brother who was still in seclusion.
Weeks went on and lan wangji found himself observing the lanterns made by the students go up in the sky. When he returned to Jingshi that evening, he found a lantern on his low table, painted with white and black rabbits. Lan Wangji was never allowed to wish, he had had the time to wish for something and had only made a wish once he released a lantern with him. But today as lan wangji released the lantern in the evening air, he closed his eyes and joined his hands and prayed. He prayed and wished, 'Wei Ying, come back.'
