This was not supposed to happen, none of the events which happened in the last eight hours were, ever. This was thought of Suzhui, as he walked towards his room in the disciples dormitory.
Flashback
The Meili Sect was not far away from Cloud Recesses, just a bit far from Gusu border. It was a minor sect, so obviously when they didn't find any disciples waiting for them, Suzhui put it down to the sect leader again failing in being subtle while showing his dislike for Chief Cultivator; though this was way out of line.
Jingyi and one another disciple had been quite vocal in expressing their indignation, though they quickly shut their mouth after a glance from Hanguang-Jun.
A Lan disciple was sent forward to carry the message of arrival of the Chief Cultivator and then the sect leader came running. Their welcome has been quick and haste, which showed that they hadn't prepared at all.
When Lan Wangji showed him the letter regarding the night hunt, the sect leader frowned and said," I didn't send this. Yes, we did got some news about resentful beings and our cultivators didn't quite succeed in completing the task but I have not finished my letter ."

A silence fell in the guest hall, Suzhui frowned while Jingyi whispered to him" He didn't complete his letter, does this mean he was going to send a letter?" Suzhui was thinking the same, but who else would send a letter asking for help in night hunt, that too with the Meili sect's seal? Only the sect leader could cast the seal.
Just then Suzhui saw something flicker in Hanguang-Jun's eyes and said, " Hanguang-Jun...?" When Lan Wangji nodded, Suzhui bowed to him and requested, " Sect leader, if I am allowed then then I would like to request you to show us the letter you were writing."

The sect leader  thought for a second, still examining the letter then said," Hm..the seal is real as far as I can tell but I haven't even finished my letter and moreover sending such a vague letter for aid in night hunt, this is a show of disrespect. I would never dare to do so with Chief Cultivator." Suzhui thought he heard Jingyi grumble something but ignored it in favour of listening the sect leader's answer to his request. After a while, he said, " Very well, I can show you the letter" and then he motioned a servant standing nearby to bring the letter.
But when the servant returned, she was not only empty handed but looked pale. She immediately went to the sect leader and whispered something to him, the sect leader's eyes widened and then he briskly left the hall.
All the Lan disciples glanced at eachother wondering what happened. The sect leader returned looking troubled and simply said " The servants must have misplaced the letter. As the Chief Cultivator has already arrived, we request your kind aid in todays night hunt and allow us to serve you. " Lan Wangji stood and bowed as well, " Mn" he turned to the disciples " Be ready"
The disciples all bowed and departed .
The night hunt went wrong. No, to say it went wrong was to call lava warm. This time, the prince didn't accompany them, as he was busy with other duties what those duties were, no one knew. Though the sect leader was quite angry at his son's behaviour. The princess also did not come, which was a relief to the Lan disciples.
They would have sighed if it was in their nature, though no one saw the princess at all. But the thing was not that, the Lan disciples along with Lan Wangji were accompanied by some Meili sect disciples. They started with tracking the resentful energy and setting up talisman for trap. But the result was not something they expected, in fact no one expected it. The resentful being went straight for Suzhui and Lan Wangji blasted a powerful strum of his guqin towards the creature.
The beast twitched, and then abruptly changed direction in a jiffy; appeared at the back of Lan Wangji and clawed at his back. All this happened so fast that no one had time to react.
Lan Wangji gasped, the pain was intense but just after a second, then it was gone. As soon as he recovered from his pain he saw the beast now jumping towards another Lan disciples. Suzhui and others tried to fight the spirit with their sword but the spirit was fast. It dodged their attacks with skillful ease and moved to claw at them when an extremely powerful blast of music made it freeze in its path. The disciples all but whipped their head in the direction of the source and found Lan Wangji furiously playing his guqin. Each strum of the strings was so phantom that the resentful being was forced to freeze totally on the spot and then with a blast it was eliminated. The disciples watched and saw that Lan Wangji's eyes were ablaze with fury, they shone in the night like two golden pools. The Meili disciples on the other hand flinched from the gaze of Lan Wangji, as if they just came out of a trance. "Hanguang-Jun " Suzhui slowly approached Lan Wangji,  as if afraid of him. Lan Wangji simply blinked and the colour of his eyes went normal and he called, " Suzhui" he reached a hand and simply touched Suzhui's forehead and then turned towards others, " Is everyone okay?" After getting assured that no one was injured, he turned towards the Meili disciples and spoke " We will return right away, kindly convey this message to the sect leader."
Though his tone was impassive the Meili disciples hurriedly bowed and assured him that the message would be conveyed.
After they left, Lan Wangji asked the juniors to mount their sword. Some looked at him, worried because while they all were totally fine, the beast had attacked Lan Wangji and they all knew that their teacher was only trying to hide his pain so that they had less things to worry about, but one glance from their Hanguang-Jun and the disciples quickly mounted their swords and the group flew towards Gusu.
Flashback ends
As soon as they reached Cloud Recesses,  Lan Wangji harold the disciples to take rest and departed. Suzhui knew that Hanguang-Jun wanted to leave as soon as he reached the ground but even when he was in pain, he cared about his disciples— just like he had for him when he was brought to Cloud Recesses for the first time. He still couldn't remember everything but he clearly remembered how gloomy and heartbroken Hanguang-Jun had looked during his recovery,  as if he wanted to die and end the pain. Sometimes when he went to meet him, he found him simply staring in void but then Zewu-Jun would call him "Wangji, someone is here" and when Hanguang-Jun saw him it seemed as if some of his misery disappeared because his eyes would brighten and when he, just a small child back then would touch his face with his tiny hands, he would close his eyes and fresh tears would roll out. Once he even asked him, " Gege, why are you crying? Don't cry." And Lan Wangji had grabbed him in a hug which seemed desperate. That day LAN Wangji had promised him that he would never cry and Zewu-Jun, he had thanked him, a small child, saying that he gave his brother a reason to live, thanked him for keeping his brother alive.
Back then he didn't understand the meaning behind those words but now he did. He did and he was grateful to be any held for the person who was his idol, his teacher and his saviour. Lan Suzhui didn't know what would have happened to him if he was not saved by Hanguang-Jun when he was. He would have died sooner or later because in everyone's eyes he was an enemy.
But even though he helped Hanguang-Jun, he still felt that he hurt him too. When A-Yuan had told Lan Wangji not to cry, he got a promise he wouldn't. But what hadn't expected was for Lan Wangji to suppress his emotions so as not to let him cry in front of the kid. He remembers once when he was sleeping ( he used to sleep on the Jingshi till he was given his courtesy name and became a  Lan disciple), as he rolled to his right, the space was empty.
At first he thought it was just his imagination and he made grabby hands to locate his Gege but after some time he peeked from inside his blanket, in which he had burrowed himself in his sleep.
It was winter so he was under the warm blanket which Hanguang-Jun had bought especially for him with protective enchantment sewn in it.
He found no Lan Wangji at his side so he slid off the bed and saw Lan Wangji standing with the porch door open, with eyes closed as silent tears rolling down his porcelain face, his face tilted upwards as soft snow landed on his hair and eye lashes. Fearing he would be caught if he stayed staring for too long he went back to bed. After sometime he felt the bedside at his right dip and he was enveloped in a familiar warmth.
But the incident kept repeating, every year on a particular day, he would feel the person beside him leave the bed as soon as the other thought he was asleep and when A-yuan was sure he wouldn't be caught, he would peek from inside the blanket and find his Gege sometimes simply staring outside, or sometimes he played a tune which would lull him to sleep.
Now he regrets ever asking Hanguang-Jun to never cry, because it was due to his request that Hanguang-Jun took to silently let out his sorrow at night when he thought that the child he promised to never cry was asleep.
Suzhui hadn't realised he had even reached the door of his room and thus ended up colliding with it."Ah" He rubbed his forehead and slid the door open to find Jingyi in deep thought, but he jerked his head towards him when he saw Suzhui entering. "Suzhui?" When Suzhui simply blinked, Jingyi gestured towards his forehead and Suzhui thought I didn't think the collision was that hard .
He changed into his sleeping robes, then went to his bed. As soon as he closed his eyes he heard Jingyi say, "Suzhui, who do you think sent the letter?" "I don't know. Whoever sent the letter must be from the palace and connected to the royal family because only the sect leader can cast the seal because it requires a high level of cultivation and one should know the secret of the seal as it is passed down from generation to generation when they succeed the previous sect leader."

"Yes, I know that and isn't it suspicious that the sect leader also didn't receive the reply sent by Hanguang-Jun?" " Hm,  don't know." Suzhui also found it highly unlikely that the letter exchange was carried out but neither the  Meili sect leader ever sent Hanguang-Jun a letter not did he receive the reply intended for him. Above him he unheard Jingyi groan " Argh, this is confusing. Even  Grandmaster Lan's exam questions are easier than this." "Hm" Suzhui hummed though he would like to hear this from Jingyi when they finish their exams, because according to Jingyi nothing was more difficult than Grandmaster Lan's exam questions.
Just as he thought his friend has fallen asleep, Jingyi's voice once again asked, " Hey Suzhui, you remember the mystery Master Wei and Hanguang-Jun solved together? Wasn't that case also confusing?"
He heard Jingyi sigh," If only Master Wei was here..." Below Jingyi, Suzhui also sighed and and thought, you are not Jingyi who wishes Master Wei was present now. He simply echoed his words," Yeah, if only Master Wei was here..." With that thought both the disciples fell asleep.
