“Mother, I want to talk to you.”

Kat knew something was wrong. Dylan only used ‘Mother’ when he was upset at her.

But she refused to bite and turned to face Dylan with a big smile on her face,

“Sure, sweetie.”

“Tyla told me that you went down to see Gina,” he said, emotionless.

The smile left Kat’s face and she took a deep breath.

“I was going to tell you all about it, Dylan.”

“Tell me about it?” he snapped.

“You invited them to come here? Mother, why are you interfering in my life?”

“Someone has to, or have you forgotten what happened a few years back.”

Kat immediately wished she had not said what she said.

“I’m sorry, sweetie.”

“I know I fucked up years ago and I know I fucked up recently, but those are my problems, Mother, not yours.”

“Stop calling me Mother. You only use that word when you are pissed at me.”

Kat was trying to keep her cool, but she did have a temper at times.

“And I am pissed at you. This is my life, let me live it.”

“Gina is a wonderful woman. She is perfect for you,” Kat pleaded.

“Just talk to her.”

Dylan was shaking his head.

“I will choose who I will be with, Mother. Me and me alone. I do not need your help and I don't remember asking for it.”

“I am just concerned that you are making a mistake that will haunt you forever,” Kat said, softly, ignoring his ranting.

Dylan softened. He loved his mother dearly, but he did get pissed off sometimes when she meddled in his affairs.

But such was the way of mothers.

“I know you mean well, Mom, but I have to work this shit out myself. I was fine the way things were, but then I sit in this restaurant and this angelic woman walks into my life…”

He paused for a moment.

“Now look at me.”

Kat went to Dylan and hugged him.

“I am sorry. I was just trying to help, but you are right. It is your life.”

Dylan kissed his mother on the forehead and turned away.

“Where are you going?” Kat asked.

He turned, a slightly confused look on his face.

“I am going to take Tyla and go somewhere. Don't ask me where.”

Kat forced a smile. She knew the conversation was over.

“Okay.”

“When I come back,” Dylan added, “I don't want anymore talk of me and Gina.”

“But,” Kat said quickly, about to interject again.

“Mother,” Dylan snapped.

“No more. Gina and I are over. It was never meant to be.”

Kat watched sadly as Dylan left the room.

Less than an hour later he and Tyla were on a flight….

somewhere.

……….

Kat took a deep breath.

“I am sorry, Gina. I might have ruined everything.”

There were tears in Gina’s eyes.

“You ruined nothing. Dylan was probably right. We were never meant to be.”

“I can’t accept that, Gina. I believe …”

Gina cut Kat off.

“Look, Kat. I know you meant well and under different circumstances, I would probably have it out with Dylan myself. But I have so much shit going on in my life right now, that I really don't need or want this on top of everything else.”

“Is it anything I can help you with?” Kat asked, sincerely.

“No.”

The tears were streaming down Gina’s cheeks, but she was determined not to cry.

“I have to go, Kat.”

“Well I just want you to know that if you need to talk.”

Gina smiled.

“Thank you. Maybe once I sort through all this shit.”

“Okay. Take care, Gina. And I am so sorry.”

“Goodnight, Kat.”

Gina put the phone back in its base.

In spite of her best efforts, she could not hold back the sobbing anymore.

She grabbed Kleenex from the box on her nightstand, just as there was a knock on her bedroom door.

“Just a second.”

“Mom, can I talk to you?”

It was Brandon.
