Her smile, I couldn't get out of my head.
I couldn't stop thinking about her, how she played hard to get. I wasn't into relationships, everyone at school knew that. I made everyone believe that I played girls for sport to cover up for the real reason I didn't believe in dating, afraid of fall in love and not being able to spend my life with the girl of my dreams. I didn't even need school, I'd learnt everything forty years ago.
I almost hated myself for showing this disgusting side of myself to the new girl, drunk was what I hoped she'd seen. In reality, I just had not had enough blood and I was exhausted, famished even.
"Any reason why you came to school after a drunk night?" My best friend, Josh, asked me as we met in the hall to head to our next lesson.
"Forgot it was a school night?" I hoped it be an acceptable answer to give but even Josh knew that wasn't true. Even then, he let it slide, much to my relief.
"So have you heard about the new girl?" Josh asked. My ears perked up. Damn, what an effect she had on me and we'd only spent an hour in class together, me spending the whole lesson staring at her.
"Yeah, she's in History with me. Why?"
"She's pretty hot," Josh replied simply.
"She's off limits." I growled at him.
"Don't tell me you want to-"
"No, its not like that." I cut him off, still annoyed at Josh. Thankfully, Josh dropped the subject.
"Coach cancelled training today," Josh said. I sighed in response. I loved football, more than anything, it was the only thing I used to remind myself that I still had some humanity in me.
Josh kept talking about something, I wasn't really paying attention all that much. Just then, I heard a familiar giggle. I turned. It was Alyssa. I recognised her giggle. She is the only person other than my family who knows about my truth. It happened when we hooked up. I didn't mean to do it, but it was too late and I had to make her become like me. Since then, we've been lowkey friends, not making it too obvious.
Super hearing was a part of what I was. It was a gift, but it was also a curse. Thankfully, I could control what I wanted to listen to.
"Yeah, drunk is his usual look," Alyssa said, most likely referring to me.
"I feel bad for his girlfriend," another voice said, getting closer.
Someone walked past me. It was the new girl, Sarah. Alyssa laughed again, probably telling her that I didn't have a girlfriend. I stopped paying attention to what they said, Sarah had me hooked.
Suddenly, she turned, slightly though, but enough for me to see the little smile on her face. Her smile, I couldn't get out of my head.
