"Why are you looking at the blondie?"
It was hard having to take weeks of break from school to train my skills and then come up with a believable cover story. If I had it my way, I would compel everyone that this was normal, but I can't.
"You're slow for a vampire Vin," said my older brother, Klaus. He was the one who believed strongly in training to hone my vampire skills while focusing on school. That's correct, I'm a vampire, kind of hard to believe since most people think vampires are a myth. Yet, here I stand, a human looking blood sucker. This was my secret, one I had to take to my grave, even though that's like an eternity later.
I grumbled. I hated Klaus for always proving himself as a better vampire since he knew how to feed off humans and I still used blood bags and rabbits. He dropped school to travel and train himself, for what I have no idea. We were working on my "stalking skills" as he calls them, which is where I choose my target, a human, stalk them to ensure they're not on vervain, a plant that can harm vampires and when taken by a human, can keep them safe from our compulsion. I had to learn to be fast enough to scare them and prevent them from running away but slow so I do not give away my identity too soon.
"I play football, I know how to maintain my speed without my vampire speed showing off," I complained to Klaus, hoping he'd let me go back home so that I could at least go to school the next week.
"I know you do," he replied, not meeting my eye. "Is it wrong for me to try to keep my little brother safe?"
His tone made my blood boil. I knew for a fact he didn't care about me, he just wanted to feed on humans again and this gave him a reason to.
"You're not keeping me safe by keeping me away from school for too long," I reminded him, thinking of a good excuse to pass off this time.
"Shush!" He snapped, his ears pricking up and his nose sniffing the air.
I joined him in trying to hear what he was. At first, I heard nothing, but then, the faint giggles from a group of girls caught my attention.
"Dinner's here," Klaus stated.
I knew he was preparing to eat them and from what I could tell, he didn't think I cared all that much about who he fed on. However, if I wanted to escape his torture of a training, pretending to hunt with him was the only way out. We both sped off, following the giggles as they echoed in our ears and the scent of warm, human blood.
"Ouch," I hissed as I was knocked over by Klaus suddenly coming to a halt.
I got off the ground and focused my attention to where he was looking. Sure enough, there were a group of three girls. As I took a closer look at them, I noticed her. Sarah. The new girl from school. That meant Alyssa was there too and, sure enough, as my gaze shifted to the left, Alyssa stood there, laughing with her friends.
"We can't kill them. One of them is a vampire," I warned. Klaus looked at me, a strange look on his face. "Our family is the only vampire family in Janesville."
"I know, I converted one after I bit her and fed her my blood," I admitted, slightly pointing at Alyssa.
"So?"
"So, we leave them alone," I tried persuading Klaus, eyes still focused on Sarah. I hadn't seen her since the day she came to school because of Klaus. I had to get him away from there or else he'd kill them without a second thought.
"Why are you looking at the blondie?" Klaus asked.
I froze. How had he realised that I'd been looking at Sarah. My eyes met his and the look on Klaus' face meant he understood.
"So little Vin's got a crush, has he?"
