"Take care of yourselves. We'll be fine. Goodbye."
I was pacing back and forth in my room, deep in thought, while Kiara and Louis stared at me in confusion. I'd called Vinnie and Alyssa, mostly Vinnie, about a hundred times, telling them to come over, but it always went to voicemail. We skipped the last few lessons of the day after Dylan and Alyssa ran out of the cafeteria.
"Sarah, why don't you sit down for a bit? We can figure this out," Kiara suggested.
I dropped onto my bed beside her. She patted my head to calm me down.
"Maybe they're having a threesome?" Louis asked casually, earning a shove from Kiara.
"You're such an idiot," Kiara said, rolling her eyes and I laughed it off, although part of me felt guilty for looking into the possibility.
"Still can't believe Dylan and Alyssa just disappeared into thin air," Louis said. "My sister is many things but an athlete is not one of them."
That was also something that hung over our heads. How could they have run out so fast when they only had a few seconds on us? We would have at least seen them run out of the school or make a turn but nothing. The hall was completely empty.
Suddenly, my phone rang and my heart skipped a beat. Vinnie's name on my screen made me giddy with relief.
"Vinnie where are you? Are you ok? What happened? Where are Dylan and Alyssa?" I bombarded him with questions, not giving him a chance to speak.
"I can't," Vinnie responded.
"What do you mean?" I asked, heart still racing.
"I can't see any of you anymore, neither can Alyssa and Dylan. All you need to know is that we're fine. If anyone asks about us, just say nothing. We'll still be in school, just not with you."
My heart sank so far down my chest I thought I was going to throw up. I turned to Kiara and Louis, who had puzzled expressions on their faces. Tears brimmed my eyes, threatening to fall.
"Take care of yourselves. We'll be fine. Goodbye."
When he hung up the call, I fell into Kiara's arms, crying. While Vinnie and I weren't a legit couple, we sure acted like one. I knew I had feelings for him and part of me felt as though he had feelings for me too, so when he said goodbye, it stung. It stung a lot more knowing that Alyssa was with him and not me.
"What happened?" Louis asked as he gave me a glass of water.
"They can't see us anymore. They'll be in school but not in our group. We have to act as if we don't know them," I filled them in, rage building up inside me, shutting out any bit of hurt I felt.
"Did he say why?" Kiara asked.
I shook my head. I knew he said he couldn't see us, but he didn't say we couldn't see him.
"Let's find out then, shall we?" I suggested. "We don't play by their rules."
