  "Being a vampire isn't a gift, it's a curse."

We all decided to skip school. It was the last day before winter break, and nobody really wanted to go to school. We had bigger things to worry about. We planned on meeting at the local cafe to go through the plan and see if anyone wanted to back out last minute.  I wasn't thinking about backing out. I finally got my moment alone with Vinnie and I wanted to tell him exactly how I felt about him, how I never looked at any guy the way I looked at him. I was also afraid that I wouldn't get to tell him if something happened to one of us.

Alyssa was walking with Kiara, Louis and me. The three others were already there. "I need to talk to you guys before we go in," Alyssa says suddenly. We were near the cafe, not too close to be heard by the boys inside. "I know I haven't been the best friend to you guys and I'm truly sorry for that, but, as your best friend, I cannot let you do this." Kiara shook her head. Louis and I refused too. Alyssa sighed. "I knew this would happen," she gives in.

We all walk into the cafe. The boys got us coffee and some snacks to get the day started. Dylan embraced Alyssa as she walked in. Kiara and Louis were already holding hands when they walked in. I met Vinnie's eyes and he smiled, a genuine smile mixed with a sleepless night. Even then, he looked more ready than any of us. I took my seat beside him, Alyssa on my right.

"Before we start," Vinnie started. "Kiara, Louis and Sarah, you are risking a lot just by sitting here right now and it is about to get worse. I get from the fact that you all are sitting here right now that Alyssa failed in convincing you to back out." Alyssa rolled her eyes, still in Dylan's arms. "So, since there are so many things that can go wrong, we need you to keep this with you at all times." He passes the three of us a small veil containing red dye. "What's in this?" Louis asked.

"Vampire blood," Vinnie responded. I almost dropped my veil when I heard his response. I stared at him, aghast. "Vampire blood will heal you instantly should you get injured. It's good to keep it with you, just in case." Vinnie looked at me with this look on his face that I couldn't explain. It was as if he wanted to keep me safe. "What if we die and someone feeds this to us?" Louis asked.  Klaus winced while Dylan, Alyssa and Vinnie exchanged looks.

"If you die with vampire blood in you, you turn into a vampire. If you die before you take it, you stay dead," Dylan explained sternly. My spirits rose. If I turned into a vampire, I could spend my whole life with Vinnie.

"Being a vampire would mean we all can protect ourselves better. We can be faster and have super hearing. It's a gift!" Louis exclaimed. "No, it isn't," Vinnie shut him down instantly.

"Being a vampire means you live forever while you see the people you love, grow old and die. Being a vampire isn't just about the super speed, hearing and enhanced features, it's about controlling your bloodlust, not sharing this secret with anyone and constantly moving around so that nobody suspects you since you don't age," Alyssa explained. "Being a vampire isn't a gift, it's a curse."

"Don't do this just to spend eternity with someone," Klaus adds, looking directly at Vinnie and me. My heart sunk. This was my only chance to be with Vinnie and it was something I really wanted to do despite the consequences.

"So now that the blood part is settled, let's review the plan," Klaus announced.
