I couldn't bear to see her do that.
The day after Dylan was invited over to Alyssa's place, we found out the two had gotten together. I wasn't too sure if Alyssa understood what Dylan meant by being "more alike than she thought" but I'm sure he would have told her, or is planning too. What mattered was that the others didn't find it suspicious. Dylan managed to cover up by saying how they were similar in the sense that they tended to get drunk too easily. Have to owe it to him for being a good liar. That, or we could have compelled them.
Some might wonder, why couldn't I have just compelled Sarah to fall in love with me? I mean, all I had to do was look her dead in the eye and tell her what I wanted her to do or feel and she would be obliged to do so, assuming she wasn't on vervain. One thing I learnt about being a vampire, as I told Alyssa too, was that vervain was a plant harmful to vampires. It burns us. When humans take it, it protects them from our compulsion and deters us from feeding on them as the vervain in their blood would burn our insides. Too much to take in? Try being a vampire. I didn't want to compel Sarah to love me because the love wouldn't be real. Worse, she's a human. If I fell too hard, it would kill me to see her die eventually while I stayed alive for eternity. However, there was another way, one I was too afraid to take.
"He looked so good though, how is he even real?" Sarah said over the phone, snapping me out of my thoughts.
We were on facetime with each other since we were the only single ones in our group. She was talking about Dylan, yes it bothered me, but I had to play it cool. I already knew the reason he looked so good was because he was a vampire- your features get amplified, making you look much more attractive. I guess that also meant he was pretty attractive before he was turned since it was his already existing features that were heightened.
"Yeah whatever," I replied. I realised it sounded harsh but I wasn't alright with talking about Dylan to the girl I liked. Thankfully, she got the hint.
Just then, my door flew open and someone walked in. "Speak of the devil," I muttered to Sarah. She giggled before ending the call.
"I didn't mean to eavesdrop but seems like the girl you like seems to find me hot," Dyaln jokes, slightly punching my arm. I rolled my eyes.
"Don't worry, I'm with her bestfriend, she wouldn't date me."
"I know."
He sat down beside me, giving me the look I knew way too good. "Nope, I only feed from blood bags."
"Damn you know me so well," he laughed.
"Well, Alyssa also feeds from blood bags so you can't take her on a hunting date," I pointed out.
"At least she knows I'm a vampire, what about Sarah, when are you going to tell her?"
"Never."
Dylan looked at me knowingly. I could tell he understood why I was afraid to tell her. I was afraid of how she'd react. I was afraid she'd leave me, and I couldn't bear to see her do that.
"I respect your decision," he started. "Don't worry, she likes you back."
"How can you tell?"
"My girlfriend happens to be her best friend."
