his days of setting himself on fire
to keep others warm were over
APRIL TENTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE16:24 in the afternoon
"THOSE EYES HAVEN'T CHANGED." A nervous smile stretched across Iwaizumi's face, his erratic heartbeat in shambles. The daunting stare of their soulmate shook their cores, cerulean eyes piercing straight through. They felt as if all their secrets had been exposed, and once upon a time, they had. Once upon a time, they had a knight who looked after them. Once upon a time, they had a prince they cherished. Once upon a time, they were complete.
Once upon a time, when nothing had been torn, when no insecurities manifested, when love and joy were all they knew.
Once upon a time.
Once upon a time.
Will it ever come back?
Only time would tell.
But right now, scrutinised under the gaze of their eldest soulmate, they were incomplete. Ripped apart from just a glance. Found unsightly by those liquid jewels. The colour of a sea they could no longer see. Grey. Solemnly, wholly grey.
A shiver racked through their spines. Kindaichi and Kunimi agreed with the older spiker.
They fumbled with their receives, messed up on their spikes and serves every time Sora's attention zeroed in on them. The trio tried desperately not to show their reactions, but everybody could see. How could they not? From the nervousness to the longing. It was prevalent. As obvious as heaven's beckoning call, the moon eclipsing the gleaming sun.
Karasuno won the second set, and Iwaizumi, Kindaichi, and Kunimi watched Kageyama interact with his new team members, envious.
Whispers flew around the balcony. Sora laid his elbow on the metal railing, resting his chin on his palm. He ignored the others around him in favour of watching his soulmate interact, happy to see him open up. Kageyama wasn't being overly emotional with them, confessing his secret despairs, but he certainly was acting more comfortable around them, allowing their reassurances to seep into his mind. He was working with them, rather than by himself.
And Sora knew, knew deep down, that he would forever be thankful to Karasuno's volleyball team. They managed to crack Tobio open, using force when necessary, and they accepted him with open arms.
This is how a team is supposed to be, Sora thought, watching as they drank from their water bottles, laughter on the tip of their tongues. This is who Tobio should be surrounded with. Not them. Blue and white tracksuits flashed before his mind. I won't let anything like that happen again.
His nails dug into his palm, imprinting crescent marks onto the skin.
The haunting horror and despair surfaced.
