How in the world did this happen...
Your jaw dropped to the floor as Coach called Tadashi up.
A pinch serve??!!
Right now?!
Tadashi couldn't manage a jump float even on a fluke!!
Yamaguchi's head mechanically turned towards you as Coach told him the news. He looked TERRIFIED.
And your shocked face did not help either.
Everything had been going fine. For the most part.
Karasuno took the second set. Hinata learned how to do a slide. And in the third set they had been keeping up with Aoba Johsai, always a point behind.
But now Blue castle had gained momentum and they were two points behind. Ukai needed something, anything, to change the game in their favor.
He figured sending Tadashi in was alright. It was early enough in the game. The boy needed experience. It's fine. It's all fine. EVERYTHING IS FINE.
But to tadashi, everything was not fine. His whole body was shaking. He was nervously sweating and his heart felt like it was trying to jump out of his throat.
He kept turning to you for comfort, but all you did was stare in shock.
"(Y/n)-" he squeezed his eyes shut and repeatedly hit your head. "Stop staring at me like that! You're not helping!"
He continued bonking your head to relieve some of his stress. It wasn't hard, but slightly annoying after a second or two.
He only stopped after you grabbed his hands. His eyes opened and he stared down at you.
"Tadashi..." you start, your face no longer shocked.
He blinked. "Yes?"
"You're gonna be fine. I know you can do it," you gave him a soft smile.
His heart fluttered, and not from nerves this time. "Y-you really think so?"
Ukai was about to butt in, but he stopped when he realized that you weren't just teasing the poor boy, you were actually helping a bit.
You nod. "You've been practicing, right? Go out there and show me what you've learned. I just know you'll do better than you think you will. Can you do that for me?" You rub your thumbs across the back of his hands.
His face heats up a little. "Y-Yeah.." he nods, going a bit shy. He felt a little sense of pride. You trusted him to score this point.
You trusted him.
But.. could he really do it?
Wouldn't you be disappointed if he failed?
Oh god
His nerves kicked back up as he waited at the sidelines with Hinata's number card. What if he screwed it up? He'd fuck up the whole game. You'd be disappointed. He didn't want that at all.
He now felt pressured to prove to you he could get that point. He can do it..
Endless doubts flooded his mind as Hinata walked over.
"Yamaguchi," Hinata said through gritted teeth, snapping the boy out of his thoughts. "Good luck. But! Im not gonna let you beat me forever!!"
"Yamaguchi," Ukai says, making the boy turn around. "Go swing the momentum for us."
He glances at you and you nod, giving him a thumbs up.
Tadashi stepped on the court and immediately felt the difference.
"Yo, Yamaguchi!! Look who just got a battlefield promotion!" Tanaka says with a grin.
"Give it your best shot, Yamaguchi!" Daichi says with a grin as well.
"Server up," Kageyama tells him, walking back to his position on the court.
"S-s-Server up! T-t-Take it easy, 'kay? R-relax!"
"Asahi, how about you take your own advice?"
"Y'know," Suga says. "Yamaguchi has been working on jump floater serves in practice lately. Do you think he'll be okay?"
"This is already a nerve wracking situation. Don't you think knowing he got sent out while we second and third years are still on the bench is putting pressure on him?" Ennoshita says, his eyebrows bent in worry.
"Oh, good point!" Suga turns and waves at you.
You tilt your head in confused. You weren't going to get up until Ukai have your shoulder a push.
"Anything that works.. just do it," he mumbles.
Suga shows you a brief demonstration before pushing you in line.
"Hey, Yamaguchi!!"
The boy look over, ball clenched in both hands.
"SERRRVER UP!! GO GET EM!!"
You all lifted your leg and pointed at Yamaguchi.
He nods nervously goes back to trying to focus.
Tadashi bounces the ball but it hits his foot and rolls away before he can catch it.
He got back into position, thinking way too hard.
FWEEEEEEEEEE
The whistle startled him and he threw the ball up. His form looked good. He hit the ball and everyone knew it was a floater.
And yet...
Blap-
It hit the white line of the net and bounced on the court with an odd sense of finality.
Cheers from Aoba Johsai flooded the gym, Karasuno dead silent in comparison.
"Um... I'm sorry," Tadashi says. "I'm really sorry..!"
Hinata was subbed back in and Tadashi apologized to Ukai before walking back over to the rest of his teammates.
You stepped forward. "Tadashi.."
He stopped, his fists clenching as he looked away from you.
You spread your arms. "Come."
He shook his head. "I'm fine.. I'm sorry.."
Suga puts a hand on your shoulder. "Not yet," he whispers before giving it a little pat.
You sigh and drop your arms. On your way back over to the bench, you gave Yamaguchi and worried glance.
You hoped he would be okay. This would give him motivation to get better but.. it had to sting.
"You'll get it next time."
Leave it to Daichi to fire everyone up.

So I decided to skip the entirety of volume 7 and the first chapter of volume 8. I counted how many chapters were left of the Aoba Johsai match, and realized there were EIGHTEEN. I didn't wanna do that to you guys, nor did I want to write 18 chapters of pure volleyball. So I skipped to a part I think is important to the plot and relationship development of Mc and the boys. I realized how I was writing more abt the match than Mc, which isn't what you guys are here for. Anyway, I'm thinking of new title for this book. If anyone wants to drop their ideas here, feel free to do so! If I see one I like or inspires me, I might just use it (with credits to you ofc). I was thinking of Hedonistic. Which is a word I think describes Mc, but not necessarily the book. I feel like it gives off the idea that this book is horknee smut but- well.. there was that one chapter... and literally every time Mc interacts with the boys but- Anyway, I just don't think it's a fitting title. I'll keep sitting on it tho. Ugh this is really long. I'm sorry T-T here's another cookie and a hug for reading this far. 🤗🍪
