the compound was empty, everyone including nat were on a mission, they received intel that an old hydra base may have been re-inhabited

you were still recovering from some injuries that you received from your last mission

it was just you, alone

after what seemed like hours of you just walking around aimlessly, you decided to seat yourself down on the bench of the piano in the main living room

you hadn't played in years but seeing as no one was home the only person that was going to judge you was the ai system

"i've heard that you're settled down."

"that you found a girl and you're married now."

"ladies and gentlemen" nat bolts through the compound and holds her hand out, allowing everyone to see the rock on her ring finger

everything about the scene was uncharacteristic of nat, the whole dramatics of it all, but the smile on her face looked somewhat genuine

"i heard that all your dreams came true."

"guess she gave you things I didn't give to you."

"old friend why are you so shy?"

"it ain't like you to hold back or hide from a lie"

you couldn't stop your eyes glossing over

"y/n, look, isn't it pretty?" the redhead asks you, moving her hand closer to you

"yeah nat, it's really something, i'm happy for you" you attempting to match her excited tone

of course you weren't to tell her truth because who were you to crush your best friend's happiness

"i hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited. but i couldn't stay away i couldn't fight it."

"i'd hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded."

"that for me it isn't over"

it didn't take long for nat to move out of the compound. it took less than a day for all her belongings to be removed

following her leaving you obviously saw less and less of her. you no longer had your weekly movie nights, nor the occasional picnics or snuggles when one of you have had a bad day

the downward turn in your mood wasn't left unnoticed by other team members. they were worried about you but hadn't a clue how to actually help you

it took you acting on an intrusive thought for you to see her for the first time in almost three months

"oh hey... y/n right ?" her 'fiancé' answered, dimples forming at the ends of her smile. she was pretty, prettier than you, that's what you thought anyways
