natasha romanoff
warnings: vormir, nat not coming back

✧࿓☾

"where is she?" you asked as the archer reappeared on the platform, eyes scanning all around him

they went to retrieve the soul stone, him and nat. the mission was supposedly a simple back-and-forth journey, that is what had been told

"see you in a minute" is the last thing she said too, looking back at it now it sounded like some sort of a sick joke

you couldn't decide what to feel. you were sad there was no doubt about it, you were distraught but for some reason the anger you were feeling rose higher than the sadness

"clint" you words came out with a slight wobble to them, almost silently asking him to either confirm or deny your thoughts

the silence you were met with made your blood boil, "barton i swear to god if you don't tell me where my goddamn wife is!" your voice raised as you took a step towards him with each wod

"i'm sorry" he mumbled, head hung low and his eyes glossing over "so sorry"

you were flicking through emotions like they were channels on a tv, again it all seemed like a sick joke that was targeted at you "haha, very funny, clint" of course you wanted it to be some prank, but a part of you knew that he would never joke about something like that

you needed him to say the words, you needed him to confirm that all the plans you had made with your wife for future will never happen

"it should have been me"

everything was happening to fast, all you wanted was someone to tell you what the hell was happening. all you knew exactly is that nat had told you that she'd be back and she never broke her promises "she'll be back. we can get her back, right?" you're eyes were wide and frantic as your directed your words towards bruce

they all remained silent, no one really knowing how to approach you "g- guys come on... w- we've got to do something"

"in a minute, she promised. this is nat. my wife. she'll be back, in a minute" you were clearing spiraling on the spot and the team knew that someone had to step

"honey" tony spoke just above a whisper as he placed his hands on your shoulders to steady you but you told yourself your didn't need comfort, nothing was wrong

your emotions were like a light switch that kept being turned on and off, angry and sad, on and off

"she's gone" bruce spoke up after a moment of silence, understanding the need for so form of clarity for your emotions to come to

your hands shook at your sides as the held back tears finally made their way down your cheeks

"she jumped, a soul for a soul. it should have been me" his words were stoking the fire that bruce nearly put out inside of you

"did you at least get the stone?" steve spoke up, his voice corse. clint unclenched his hand, holding out this little shining yellow rock for everyone to see

the sight made your body tense, all your mind could think of was that your wife's life was given for a little yellow rock "can i hold it?"

without further exchange of words, he walked up to you and placed it on your palm, folding your fingers over it and squeezing them shut, trapping the stone in your grasp. he then proceeded to press your closed fist with the rock inside to the left side of your chest and held it there

"she did it for everyone, for you"
