On the way to the grocery store, I couldn't stop thinking about how I would repay him for fixing things in my home.  It was so kind of him, and he most certainly didn't have to do all of this for me.  It was almost unreal that he was being so polite.  Yet, here he was, taking care of things in my home and even driving to the store so that he could pick up what he needed to complete certain tasks.

"Could I make you dinner?" I finally asked after a few minutes of quiet aside from the radio.

"Could I take you to dinner?" he asked.

It came off as a surprise.  While I knew he had enjoyed hanging out with me, I didn't think he would want to ask me to dinner.  Of course, I was offering to cook for him, but the fact that he wanted to take me out was something I was definitely not expecting him to say to me.

"No," I told him.  "I would prefer if I could cook for you."

"Hmm," he murmured.  "I mean, if you'll let me take you out sometime."

Again, I was shocked that he was pressing this subject matter so much.  The thought was crazy to me, not to mention that he had asked me for drinks the other night and I had to decline.  Of course, every piece of me wanted to feel like he wasn't truly asking me these things.  Why would such an attractive man want anything to do with me? I didn't think I was bad looking by any means, but he was just the top of the bunch, and I was, well, not the top of the bunch.

Then, I started to think about it more.  Certainly he was spending time with me.  He was going out of his way for me.  And yet, I had the slightest feeling that I needed to ask if he was seeing someone else.  It was worrisome to me, not because I had been cheated on, but simply because I had vowed to never be the other woman.  After all, the seventh commandment was, "Thou shall not commit adultery," and while I wouldn't be the one committing it, I certainly wanted no part of it.

"Are you seeing other people?" I asked suddenly.

Harry shut the radio off then, and I could have sworn I watched his body language shift.  He had been carefree before, and now I felt the subtle shift; the bubbly mood ceasing to exist.  There was a part of him that had closed off from me, and I didn't know what to do.  Had I said something wrong? It was a genuine inquiry, it wasn't like I was asking something so entirely out of reach.

"Are you?" he questioned lowly.

"No."

"Hmm," he nodded, pulling up to the hardware store.  "Well, I see plenty of people all the time.  Daily, even.  At work, or when I see my friends.  I just don't think I know what kind of people you're implying."

He was being cold.  It was like he was avoiding the question, but it was very much so giving an answer.  Once he parked, he got out of the car, walking over to my side and opening the door.  I was somewhat confused by his behavior, though when we headed inside, a couple of the guys called his name, Harry waving and sending a dimpled smile even though he had been irritated moments before.
