"Elaina was out of her mind to hold onto a memory that she knew would never belong to her."
🏹🏹🏹
IT WAS AROUND half eight in the morning when Elaina had decided to head over to the chicken barn to feed the hens. After putting on her boots, and tying the ribbons in her hair, she went over to the willow tree where T-Dog met her every morning.
They had both got quite use to the routine; rise, get ready, and rally around the hens. Elaina had never known how to look after chickens until Jimmy had shown her. It was her way of saying thank you to Hershel, for lending all of the wonderful science books to her.
In the glimmering light of the sun, Elaina's brown hair shone with potency. She had the same thick hair as her brother, who had spent plenty of time combing it out when they were younger. Elaina could still recall the dread she felt every morning when Luke had told her it was time to get her hair brushed.
"You're quiet today, little lady," T-Dog said while loading grain into the cartons.
Elaina looked at T-Dog while continuing to brush up the scattered hay. "Was your daughter quiet?"
T-Dog froze for a moment, before turning to the bag of grain. "That girl could've talked a tomato plant into growing itself."
Elaina chuckled, finding herself lingering on the feeling it gave her. "What did she like?"
"Everything," T-Dog smiled. "She would've liked you, little lady. Probably wouldn't have been able to get enough of you and your science facts."
Elaina thought of the warm feeling of friendship. In what ways would things be different if Imani had been here? Elaina thought of her laughing with T-Dog about the funny sounds that the chickens made, or the powdery remains that the grain left on your hands. How nice it would've been to have another kid here.
For what, to lose? A voice said to Elaina in her mind.
Almost instantaneously, she thought about Sophia. In what ways would things be different if she was still here? Elaina thought of her, Imani, and Sophia running around the chickens in the back yard. What a pleasant thought it was, but it was nothing more than that.
Imani was dead, and Sophia was missing. Elaina was out of her mind to hold onto a memory that she knew would never belong to her.
"You done brushing, little lady?" T-Dog asked.
"Uh, yeah, I am," Elaina said, passing T-Dog the brush. "I'm glad Imani would've liked my science facts."
