THE WALKERS EMERGED FROM the field, scattering their chaos everywhere. Elaina gripped her bow and made her way across the field with Wayne, who was holding his rifle. Elaina could see the farmhouse in the distance, but it was still far away, and with little ammo and lots of walkers heading their way, Elaina didn't know if they would make it as far as the farmhouse.
"Elaina, you need to listen to me. Stay quiet and use your bow when you can, okay?"
"I'll try," Elaina whispered.
Wayne gave her one last nod and headed in the direction of the bushes. Elaina thought if the group in that moment. Had they seen the walkers, too? Up ahead, Elaina met the eye of a walker and it headed in her direction. Wayne was busy taking out a small group of walkers, which caused Elaina to pull her bow back and shoot an arrow towards the walker's head. The dark night meant that it took Elaina much longer to aim her bow in the direction of the walker's head. Finally, after what felt like forever, she released her arrow, and it hit the walker directly in the head.
"Elaina, grab that arrow from its head and follow me!" Wayne whispered. Elaina nodded before she ran over to the walker and pulled the arrow out of its head. Dark, red blood came squirting out. A sight which no longer repulsed her. She ran in Wayne's direction, carefully avoiding the oncoming walkers.
The sound of gunshots could be heard from the farmhouse which comforted Elaina. It told her that the group was up there, fighting. Maybe Montana was up there, too. Maybe she had made her way back. Maybe the gunshots were hers.
The comfort didn't last too long, as another feeling ebbed at her mind. Maybe she'd been mauled by the same walkers Elaina and Wayne had run from. Maybe one of the gunshots came from T-Dog, putting Montana out of her misery after she'd been bitten.
"They're everywhere," Wayne said, shaking his head. Elaina looked for gaps in the groups, but there were barely any, and now more walkers were heading in their direction. Elaina felt her chest rise and fall with panic. Her lungs moved, taking in the air that was filled with the smell of bullets and fear and blood. "How can they travel so quickly?"
"They split up," Wayne stated. "A horde of them travelled in one direction, and the others travelled this way. They will meet up again, Elaina, and that horde is too much to handle. This one is already bad enough. Watch out!"
Elaina pulled her bow back, aiming for the heads of the walkers. She was a little quicker, taking out three in a short space of time. The blurring noise of gunshots still persisted, but they were less frequent, which told Elaina that people were running out of ammo, or that less people were firing the guns. In the distance, Elaina's eye caught the barn, which was rising in flames. Wayne gripped Elaina's arm and ran in the direction of the farmhouse. They were quite far away, but they were getting closer. After stabbing two walkers in the head, Wayne pulled Elaina behind a tree.
