Making a deal with the Chinese mob had been childsplay. Choosing Maze as a champion to easily beat Kang and get the information they'd come for had been simple. Finding out that Dan had slept with his mother was the single worst thing that had happened to Lucifer in several hundred millennia! Telling Chloe about it had been all together rather traumatizing. He wasn't sure what was worse, the fact that it was his mother or her ex. The whole thing just gave Lucifer the heebie jeebies!

When court resumed Lucifer sat in the audience to watch the detective take the stand. He wasn't sure what exactly his mother had wanted to talk to Chloe about but he felt sure that it wasn't good. When his mother got up to question the detective on the stand Lucifer couldn't help but tense up.

"Yes that's right, he's a civilian consultant for the LAPD," Chloe replied to mother's question. "We solve cases together."

"How is he qualified for that role?" mum asked.

"He has good instincts," Chloe replied. "He understands people's desires."

"I assume he also studied law enforcement?" mum asked.

"Not to my knowledge," Chloe replied.

Lucifer wasn't exactly sure what mum was getting at here. She knew very well what his qualifications were and she didn't exactly value any of the qualifications of human society. She herself was at this very moment acting as a lawyer without anything close to a law degree. She probably just read the books over a weekend or something.

"So he has a professional background that is somehow relevant to law enforcement?" Mum continued with her line of questioning.

"He owns a nightclub," Chloe explained. "He knows a lot of people, has lots of connections that have helped me solve cases."

"But surely it takes more than that to become a consultant for the LAPD?"

"Actually it turns out it doesn't," Chloe said.

Chloe seemed rather... he wanted to say pleased, but surely that couldn't be right. Then again mum looked a bit pissed. More than ever Lucifer wanted to know what they'd talked about.

"So anyone with friends can be police now?" mother said in a mocking tone.

"Lucifer isn't police," Chloe corrected. "He's a consultant. My boss told me to work with him and it turned out that we worked well together. It's as simple as that."

Lucifer got the sense there was something Chloe wasn't doing that his mother wanted her to do, but he hadn't a clue what it could be.

"What about his claims that he's the devil?" mum asked next.

"Have you ever heard of method acting?" Chloe replied casually. "Lucifer Morningstar is the best partner I've ever had and there is no way you can phrase your question that will change my answer."

Mum was silent for a long moment before she told the judge she was done with her witness. Chloe got off the stand and the rest of the trial passed quietly ending in the non-guilty verdict they both knew was coming.

Now that she wasn't actually defying a goddess the glee in Chloe's eyes had faded. Lucifer saw only failure and sadness there. He hated seeing such emotions on her face. He wanted to ask her right there and then what had happened but knew he had to wait until they couldn't be overheard. Chloe didn't like to discuss celestial things in public for fear of being called crazy.

They'd found their quiet moment outside after the court room had been cleared. Chloe had walked outside and Lucifer had simply followed her. The weather was actually rather nice today but it did nothing to lift the mood. Looking around Lucifer felt like there were still a bit too many people around. He noticed a small cafe stand off a ways and gestured for them to walk over. As they went, Lucifer couldn't stop himself from wondering what they might have talked about.
