Rue

"Sometimes I start to wonder if you come to see me or Alexis." I say to Kaleb. We've been planning a December Christmas movie marathon for weeks on end but he never stays the full movie. Once we're halfway through he gets up, disappears in Alexis's room and I never see him for the rest of the night.

Tonight's movie is Home Alone and Kevin hasn't even booby-trapped the house yet. "I'll stay the full movie tomorrow, I promise." He gets out of my bed.

"You've been saying that for a week." I launch a small pillow at him.

"Call India or Shuri. I'm sure they'd happily come to watch movies with you." He tosses it back at me.

"It's not the same as watching them with my best friend. Besides, India is doing something at her church and Shuri is out with Amiri."

"What fun is having two girlfriends if they're both busy."

"A, they're not my girlfriends. B, it's not all that it's cracked up to be."

"Why?" He sits back down.

"I'm a one-woman girl. I'm not made to entertain two people. My feelings are starting to get harder to ignore. I know there is going to come a time I have to choose."

"Or you could just leave them both. I know no matter what you'll be friends with both of them in the end. So when it gets to be too much and you're ready to settle down. Don't do it with either one of them. It'll be hard at first but you can do it. Either that or go where we all know your heart is leading you." He smiles at me.

I find myself wiping the tears that are falling from my eyes. "Going where my heart leads me isn't always the most sane option."

"You know what my Nanny always told me, 'Love is without its faults. It isn't always who you love that's the problem. Sometimes you just need to change how you love.' She was a very wise woman."

"So what are you saying? Love her and expect things to change?"

"The first time you two were together you had your guard up fully, almost no access for her to get in. She had to slowly tear that wall down. The second time around you had your guard down, you trusted her. Each of those times there were things you two kept from each other. Now that there's a clean slate you can give her your all and still have your walls up, just a little." Kaleb speaks with a calm tone. I lean over to hug him, thanking him for his helpful advice. "Only after you give her hell for all the shit she put you through." He chuckles.

"Yeah, I planned on it. Who knows, maybe the way I feel about India will outgrow the feelings that I have for Shuri. At the end of it all I just want to be happy. They both give me that right now without all the madness surrounding it."

"I think your heart will know what to do when the time comes. Just trust it no matter what." He stands up for the second time. "Well, my best friend duties are complete. I am going to attend to my girlfriend now." He smiles.

"Goodnight bestie." I wave him out.

"Good night little one." He closes my door.

I lay down thinking about our conversation. I don't know where this excursion is going to take me, I could end up alone. I know when this is all over I'm going to come out happy, that's all I ever wanted.

"So, that's it for you and Rue? You met a Wakandan goddess who has had you grinning since you walked in here." Simon speaks from the bed.

I kick off my slides and lay beside him. "Of course not, she doesn't want me right now but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to make our relationship work out."
