[Ghost]

I glance at the clock on my desk. 03:30 AM.

I sigh as I scan over the documents once more. Marking important parts and placing tabs.

I work best at night. Not to be disturbed by every little thing.

Like Y/N

I shake my head as I replay our last conversation.

''The fact you speak to me like that shows me you have learned NOTHING''

Her words echo in my head. Not that I am fazed by them, it's all empty words to me. But the fact she had the nerve to talk to her superior like that. She is a feisty one, and not in a good way, more in the she is going to be a fucking handful kind of way.

Did I instigate this behavior? Perhaps. But that doesn't let her off the hook. I am way harder on new recruits who come fresh out of school and they seem to be able to handle it. And if they don't, it's a one-way ticket home.

I grunt as I stand up. Stretching my tall body as it protests, due to the strain of all the combat I have been in over the years.

Maybe that's the answer, putting her to the test during training. Maybe she was right about already downplaying her, let me prove my point by having her show me she is nothing.

I start walking down the hallway, as I make my way towards the garden. The small lanterns placed on the floor give it a more fantasy type of feeling. Which is ironic, at a military base.

Must be Laswells doing, not that I mind, or even care.

I light up my cigarette as I lean against the outside wall of the base. Lurking in the shadows is my specialty anyway, and I can't help but feel most comfortable there.

I feel myself calm down as the smoke hits my lungs. Exhaling it through my nose as I suddenly hear the big metal outside door creak when it opens.

Y/N slides out of it. Not wanting to make any more noise, so as to not wake anyone.

Probably not wanting to wake me. Little does she know.

I roll my eyes as I see her pathetic attempt to be stealthy if this is how she is in the field. Then God have mercy on all of us.

She doesn't notice me. She is wearing a long satin black robe. Her long hair swept in a high bun. She makes her way through the bushes and the flowers. The small lights of the lanterns hit her face in an almost enchanting way. Like a garden fairy, she admires the little piece of nature we created. It makes my eyes roll. Leave it to the woman to be the only one to admire such things.

''I can see you''

She is crouched down to look at some red rose, her back towards me.

I raise my eyebrow. A bit surprised she in fact did see me.

''I would be worried if you didn't'' I take another hit of my cigarette. ''I wasn't exactly hiding.'' my tone cold and still sounding a bit frustrated as a warning to not piss me off even further.

Y/N scoffs as she stands up, now turning around to face me.

''I would be lying if I said I am happy to see you again.'' Her tone is cold and distant, much like mine. But her feminine nature makes it way less intimidating.

''Likewise'' I grunt as I take another hit. I stare at her, my gaze piercing. ''Don't think for a second I forgot your tone towards me recruit,'' I growl at her.

''You act like it was wrong of me'' she says a bit more playfully.

''You know it was.'' I snap back, not amused by her playful remark.
''You don't talk to your superiors like that. The fact I have to teach you-..''

''You don't have to.'' Y/N interrupts me. She folds her arms over her chest as she meets my gaze. ''I think you know respect is earned, not given.''

''I have earned the respect I get, recruit''

''Well not from me''

''That means you are the problem then.''

She looks at me. Dropping her arms in frustration.

''God I can't believe how goddamn stubborn you are..''

''Takes one to know one''

''So you think I'm stubborn?''

''Affirmative.''

She rolls her eyes. In the light of the lantern, I see something glisten around her neck. I can't quite see what it is, but I wonder why she would wear what I assume is jewelry at night.

''It's like talking to a wall with you,'' she grunts.

''Finally, something we can agree on.''

She sighs as she walks a bit closer to me. ''Listen Ghost..''

''That is Lieutenant for you.''

''Fine, LT'' She says mockingly. ''I don't know why you don't like me. But we are stuck with each other, okay? Captains orders. So please can you stop being a dick towards me all the time?''

I scoff as I flick my cigarette bud away. ''Listen here, princess'' I say matching her mocking tone as my words drip with venom. It takes all my strength to not just grab her arm and slam her into the wall. Knocking some sense into her would really make my day.

''No special treatment.'' I make sure to empathize my words.
''I don't care who you are. This is how things are done at my base. You think you're all that because you were the best soldier at your own base. Well, scrap that.''

I'm having trouble keeping my composure as she really gets under my skin.

''Under my command, I demand respect and subordination. That means no backtalk and no sassy comments. Do I make myself clear?'' My tone is harsh and authoritative, leaving no room for argument.

Her eyebrow twitches. It takes all her strength to not lash out at me, I can tell.

She takes a deep breath.

''Clear.'' She says slowly like it pains her to have to say it. And I just know it does.

I can't help but let out an amused chuckle as I got her right where I want her.

''Good. Now go to bed. Training starts tomorrow morning. Don't be late. You get one chance to show me how good you actually are..''
