-Wes-

"Shit. I didn't think you'd be here," she mutters when she sees me.

I furrow my brows at her words. What the fuck? She really was purposely avoiding me. That's bullshit.

I open my mouth, but before I can go off on her and demand she tell me everything, Ryland is already sliding his way in front of me.

"Where the hell have you been? You know, we've all been worried sick about where you two were. And if you would've been around the past week, you would know Wes moved in with me, so, he's going to be here quite a lot. Now tell us where you've been. And where Alyx is."

When she doesn't answer right away, I find myself getting angry, so I push myself in front of Ryland to say, "Where is he? I know you know. I'm not stupid enough to believe he'd just break up with you like that.

Her eyes avoid mine, but she finally responds. "I really don't. I'm sorry. After graduation, he told me he was leaving right then, and that he didn't want to do the long-distance thing. When I offered to go with him, he just said it'd be better if we just broke up. I'm sorry for going AWOL, but I was kind of dealing with a broken heart." I carefully monitor her face with every word, and as much as she looks serious, I don't believe her.

"Where did he say he was going for college?"

"He didn't tell me anything. He probably thought I'd follow him."

"Why the no contact with me then? His mom? It doesn't make any sense to cut us off."

"I don't know, Wes. I'm sorry."

I let an angry huff out and walk off to go to the couch, leaving Ryland to deal with her. I don't believe a damn word she says. At all.

But I still find myself listening when Ryland says, "Why can't you just tell us the truth? He's hurting, Maya."

"Even if I did, it doesn't change the fact that I don't know where he went nor can I get a hold of him. He broke his phone that night."

"So, there is something you're not telling us?"

"Like I said, it doesn't matter. I'm just going to go. I'm sorry."

"Maya, wait-" Ryland lets a sigh out before closing the door back.

"What do you think?" I ask when he comes over to sit by me.

"She's definitely hiding something, but I do believe she's heartbroken. She just had this sad look in her eyes that I've never really seen before."

"Do you think she's being honest about his phone?"

"I mean, it doesn't even ring when you try calling, so it checks out."

"I give up then," I mumble.

"Wes..."

"No, it's pointless. Like Theo said, I just have to wait until he decides to come back." I can tell he wants to say something, so I urge him to say it. "What?"

"I don't want to ask this to hurt your feelings, but what if he never does?"

"Then fuck him, I guess."

"Wes..."

"I don't want to talk about it anymore. I'm going to go lie down for a little bit."

He doesn't say anything else, so I make my way to the room. I climb in bed and bury my face in my pillow. It's fine. I'm fine. I just have to be patient. That's all. I let a frustrated huff out, though. That's hard to do when I'm literally the most impatient person ever.
