This was ultimately sad fans of both Mario and Sonic as outside of smash bros the series was their stand alone between the two franchises and were definitely my childhood despite it's flaws and though I haven't played all of the games I still think they are pretty cool. But with the ending of the Mario and Sonic series, many fans are now hoping that maybe we could have an actual crossover in the future that isn't in the Olympics which is why for today's discussion we're going to be discussing what a Mario and Sonic crossover for the future should look like. I've seen many videos discussing the future or potential hope for crossovers for Mario and Sonic so I thought I'd do the same thing since Mario and Sonic are my all time favorite video game franchises as well as my favorites in all of fiction. Anyways with all that being said let's get started.
Let's start things off with the issues and how we can fix them. Though I along with many others loved the Mario and Sonic series there were several issues. Like for starters lack of newer characters ever since the release of the Winter Olympic Games and outside of the guest characters their have been no new playable characters in the Mario and Sonic series, the roaster has pretty much mostly stayed the same, we also have the issue of some of the sports games being less enjoyable only the Dream events being completely enjoyable and some of the story modes are just pretty basic. All of this has turned people off the Mario and Sonic series since you're mostly playing the same game and outside of the intros nothing really changes all of this is basically the same as the last one which might play a factor in the Mario and Sonic series ending. Now that we have that out of the way let's get into details as to how we can have a proper Mario and Sonic crossover.
Let's start with the story. The story is the second most important thing to make outside of gameplay. A proper Mario and Sonic crossover has potential to have some of the best storytelling we have seen not just in video game history but also media history. You can obviously have many things happening like Mario and Sonic teaming up to defeat Bowser and Eggman from taking over their worlds or you can have an original character be a much bigger threat that forces the entire cast to work together. I know this because I remember seeing Super Mario Bros Z which is something I used to watch as a kid but basically we see Mario and Sonic characters teaming up to try and defeat Mecha Sonic, and if you're someone who's read my own Mario and Sonic crossovers such as Dimensional Chaos and currently Worlds in Danger you can also have original characters be the villains like Yami and Senso Tatakai original characters of my own creation being the threats of my own that forces the entire Mario and Sonic cast to come together although in Senso's case Bowser and Eggman are working with him. Either way you could have great storytelling where we can have Mario and Sonic team up it also gives us the opportunity to explore character dynamics like I know we have a glimpse of them in the Olympic Games but they aren't fully fleshed out enough. A proper Mario and Sonic crossover would give us a great opportunity to explore character dynamics which can lead to bonds, interactions, character growth, and development. It also a good opportunity to see lots of cool action with combination of characters like imagine Mario and Sonic combining the Power Stars and Chaos Emeralds? That would be awesome. Fan made Mario and Sonic crossovers are proof that an official Mario and Sonic crossover made by Nintendo and Sega have potential for great storytelling.
Now let's talk about gameplay which is the most important part to make a proper Mario and Sonic game work. There are many ways we can make this work. We can have a 2D platforming gameplay, 3D platforming gameplay, and an RPG gameplay. As for the first two while it may be difficult to try and make a Mario and Sonic platforming game work there are ways we can do it. We could have levels or sections that can fit both characters. We could have Mario sections where Mario and some other characters have a more slow paced jumping and platforming section where you jump on enemies and get flag pulls, then we have the Sonic levels where Sonic and several other characters usually boost around levels at high speeds trying to reach a goal ring. Now as for RPG I think there is one way you can do it, you could make it in the form of Mario and Luigi games where you uses special attacks and time them perfectly and time perfectly to dodge and counter enemies attacking you. Whatever the case if they decide to go the RPG route they better not make the mistakes Honkai Star Rail did where you attack or defend once and let the enemy hit you and they amp up the difficulty too high and force you to do tedious grinding even when your characters are max leveled. Now open world gameplay is where things get interesting it could go many routes, you can switch between Mario and Sonic or any other playable character and go through various ways like in Mario Odyssey and Sonic Frontiers whatever the case I hope it's not like Genshin Impact or Breath of the Wild where the open worlds feel bland and almost nothing to do outside of tedious collectables. There are ways gameplay can work in a proper Mario and Sonic crossover game and it has potential to be good or at the very least better than the gameplay in the Olympic Games where it's mediocre at best.
Overall do I think a proper Mario and Sonic crossover would happen? Most likely not because the reason why didn't get one as far back as the early 2000s is because Nintendo wanted to do the Olympics but maybe with the Olympics gone things could change but I'm not getting my hopes up. Nevertheless despite it's problems I loved the Mario and Sonic series and seeing it go is a huge blow for many fans of both characters especially me because though we have Smash Bros, the Mario and Sonic series is a standalone title for both and losing that is really sad. Wether or not we actually do get a proper Mario and Sonic game in the future though 99% unlikely still remains to be seen but either way I'll miss the Mario and Sonic series as it was my childhood.
But anyways guys that's all I have for today thank you all so much for reading let me know in the comments below what you think a proper Mario and Sonic should look like and if you like or disliked the Olympic Games. Make sure you add this to your library and reading list so you can stay up to date with new chapters. Thanks again for reading and I will see you all next time. Peace.
