Nina's POV
"What the hell happened?!" I yelled, strapping my seat belt around me as we all poured into Zach's car.
Ian sat in the passenger's seat and the rest of us rode in the back. He was biting his fingernails worriedly.
"Well, all we know is that they weren't in the same car," Kat sighed. "They were going to meet halfway to talk about property custody and stuff, so Paul was driving from here and Torrey was driving back from San Francisco."
"Wait, what?" I asked. "Property custody for what?"
All of them looked at me as if they felt bad that I didn't know. "What?" I asked. "What's happening?"
"They're getting divorced," Kat said. The way she said it, it sounded like she didn't want me to ask any more questions.
"Oh."
"Then?" Ian pressed worriedly, ignoring the fact that I just knew about this whole divorce thing the same time I found out that they almost died in a car accident.
"They were on the phone through the ride, trying to get service or something," Steven answered. Then, they eventually saw each other's cars and sped up a little. Unfortunately, neither one of them actually saw the ten-wheeler truck that was speeding from the left road."
"Their cars sandwiched the truck, but of course, they received more impact," Candice said. "Torrey got worse damage, though. Her car totally folded in and her head hit the steering wheel hard. Apparently, she's also had some sort of cardiac malfunction. She has a massive head injury and internal bleeding."
"And Paul?" I asked sadly.
"He's unconscious, but has it nowhere near fatal as Torrey," Zach said. "He's got a broken arm and a dislocated ankle though, plus a few bruises all over his body. But, no internal damage."
Ian buried his face in his hands and was visibly shaking. Zach placed a palm on his shoulder and shook him reassuringly. "Bro, it's gonna be fine."
"You don't know that," he said, his voice as shaken as he was.
"All we can do is hope for the best, okay?" Candice beamed hopefully. "If we do that, everything's gonna work out."
"She's right, you know," I sighed, placing a hand on Ian's shoulder. "They'll be okay."
I felt him tense up then relax from my touch. After a second, I realized what I was doing and pulled my hand back automatically.
He obviously felt shock from my sudden movement and I placed my hand on my arm. Candice and Kat both stared at me, but I kept my eyes to the ground.
"How long before we get there?" Ian asked, trying to sound calm.
"We're about five minutes away," Zach said. "Just a little turn on this curb and another block."
"Can't we hurry it up?" Ian sighed, exasperated. "We need to see them. NOW."
"We all want to see them too, Ian," Zach groaned. "But if I went any faster, we might be getting there in an ambulance."
Ian groaned and ran a hand over his face. I looked at him through the mirror and frowned sadly. He was really worried.
I was too, we all were. But, Ian was Paul's best friend who might as well be his brother.
I wanted to wrap my arms around him and kiss the space between his forehead. I want to tell him that everything's going to be okay.
But I can't.
