Soda set me down on my feet lightly. “We’ll go to the hospital once Pony and I’s brother, Darry, gets home, okay?” Soda said and I nodded, “You guys head in, I’ll want to be alone for a little while.” They walked inside and I sat on the bottom step and drew in the dirt with my foot. I heard someone come out of the door but I didn’t look up. “So, if Johnny is shy and quiet, what is Jennie like?” It was Steve. “Well I can tell you that I am usually not like this.” I said and forced a chuckle. “Yea, I can understand that.” He said. I looked out across the yard and sighed. “Hey, stop worrying so much. Johnny’s gonna be okay.” He said and came and sat down next to me. “And don’t ever think about taking yourself away from us.” Steve added and put an arm around my shoulder. “Okay,” I said and nodded, “I won’t.” I looked out into the sky and saw the sun beginning to set. “I came to warn you about Darry.” Steve said and followed my gaze. “He’s not the friendliest person out there and he may say something he don’t mean.” “Right now I don’t care if he called me a greaser slut that can’t keep track of her players.” I said mumbling a little. I sighed, “I just hope Johnny is okay.” Steve rubbed my arm, “We’re here for you.” “B-but Johnny doesn’t want me to hang out with you guys.” I looked at him and could feel tears in my eyes. “Johnny was just probably worried that Dallas wouldn’t like you, but when he found out that you were Johnny’s sister I could tell that he had a soft spot for you.” He said and I nodded. I heard a truck pull into the drive way. Steve stood up and walked over to the guy that just got out. I could hear Steve talking to the guy saying that I was Johnny’s sister and that he was in the hospital. I looked at them and I could see his face soften when he looked at my heart broken state. “Get the guys and we’ll go.” He said and Steve jogged in the house. The other guy walked up to me and kneeled down. “I’m Darry, Pony and Soda’s brother.” He said extending his hand to me. “I’m Jennie, Johnny’s sister.” I said and gave him a small smile and shook his hand. “What happened to Johnnycakes?” Darry asked and I sighed. “My bitch of a mom hurt him while my basturd of a dad was chasing and trying to hurt me.” I said coldly, “I met Soda and Steve at the DX and they called the police and had them arrested and on the way running to my house I ran into Dal and I met Pony and Two-bit the day before.” He nodded, “Johnny always came over here with bruises and cuts from your dad. If you need a place to stay tonight, you’re welcome here.” “Thanks.” I said and gave him a weak smile. The others came out of the door and walked down the steps. I stood up and followed them to the truck. I hopped in the back along with Dal and Soda and the others got in the truck. I sat between the two boys on the way to the hospital. I hugged my knees to my chest and Dallas put an arm around my shoulder. I leaned my head against him. “I’ll make you a deal kid.” Dal whispered in my ear for only me to hear. “What would that be?” I asked looking at him. “The last time your brother almost died I wanted to do the same thing you do if he dies. If he doesn’t make it I won’t kill myself if you don’t.” He said and I nodded, “Deal.” I could feel the truck slow down and I looked up to see the hospital. I jumped up and out of the back just as it stopped. I ran inside as fast as I could. The others were a little behind me and weren’t inside yet. “Johnny Cade where is he?” I asked frantically. The woman at the desk didn’t look too friendly as she looked through the papers. “He’s not allowed visitors at this time.” She said rudely. “Where is he, I need to see him. He’s my brother.” I explained hoping she would let me see him. “I told you that he isn’t allowed visitors. I don’t care if you’re his damn sister or someone he met on the street. You are not seeing him. Now please leave.” She said and pointed to the exit. “Fine fine, I don’t have to see him but how is he doing, is he going to be okay, will I be able to see him soon, what did-“ I said beginning to asked a million questions but she cut me off. “I don’t frickin know I’m not a doctor and frankly I don’t care.” She said and that pushed me over the edge. “Listen here lady, he’s my brother and I should be able to see him.” I said leaning over the counter and into her face. She didn’t move and inch but she gave me a blank look snapping her gum. “I’m gonna tell you for the last time, you are not seeing your brother and I hope he doesn’t make it and fucking dies.” She said and towards the end she was screaming in my face. I felt tears well in my eyes and I pulled my arm back and gave her a good punch to the face. She fell back and I ran out whipping tears off my face with my sweat shirt sleeve. The guys were yelling for me to stop and to come back but I didn’t listen. I couldn’t hear them anymore as I neared the park. I slowed down to a walk and sat at the base of a tree. Tomorrow was the first day of December. I couldn’t help but think about Christmas and my birthday without Johnny. I cried and cried at the cold woman’s words. She may not know him or think he is important but he is to me, Johnny is the most important person in the world to me. I can’t live without him. I could see my breath as I sobbed praying to God that Johnny would live. I was freezing cold but too exhausted and upset to move. It had been a half hour since I ran out of the hospital. I had calmed down so I wasn’t sobbing anymore but I didn’t stop crying. The sobbing was replaced by chattering and the sound of my body shaking. I didn’t think I could get any colder or if I was ever going to warm up again. It was dark out now and from where I was I could see the dim glow of street lights from where I sat. The town seemed to stand still at this hour, or so I thought. I heard a car drive up to the sidewalk and I looked over and recognized it as Darry’s truck. All the guys got out and stood under the street lamp. “Guys I think we should call it a night. For all we know she could have run home.” Darry said and Soda responded quickly, “No she’s not there, I looked. Searched every inch of the house. Darry we have to keep looking she’s going to freeze out here tonight.” I could see him nod. “Man I can’t believe she can run that fast, I’m surprised even Pony couldn’t catch her.” Dal said. I tried to keep my body heat from leaving my small frame but I continued to shiver. “What if we can’t find her, what’s Johnny gonna say when we tell him we lost his kid sister?” Steve asked and the whole gang was quiet. “I can’t even imagine what he would do.” Soda said and Ponyboy looked my way, directly at me. I didn’t move a muscle and didn’t make a sound, which was incredibly hard to do. The wind picked up and blew the branches on the tree above my head. I heard a snap and my vision shot upward. A fairly big branch broke and came down on me. It landed on my legs and it hurt a lot but they weren’t broken I could tell. I closed my eyes in pain and when I opened them I looked at Ponyboy who was still looking at me. The others had begun to get back in the truck. I looked at him with hopeful eyes and he must have seen me. He began to walk towards me and I tried to move the branch but it was too heavy. When he realized that he wasn’t just seeing things and that it really was me, he broke into a sprint. He lifted the branch off my legs when he got to me and knelt down next to me and grabbed my shoulders. I could see worry and concern in his eyes. “Are you okay?” He asked and I nodded. “Ju-just c-c-cold.” I said my voice shaking with my body. Pony lifted me into his arms. “Don’t worry we’ll take you back to the house and get you warmed up.” He said jogging back to the truck where everyone was waiting. “Please never run off like that again you had me so worried.” Pony said holding me closer to his body to keep me warm.
