Chapter 24

We got to the park and were about to make teams when I noticed Darry’s truck pull up. He climbed out and walked over. “Hey Darry want to play football?” I asked tossing the ball up and down in my hands. “Sure why not.” He said everyone seemed to know that Sodapop and Darry were always the captains. “Ponyboy, Dal, and Jennie you’re on my team.” I smirked at the others. Johnny and Two-Bit’s eyes widened. “No fair they’ve got the two jocks and Dal.” Steve exclaimed. “Yea, but they’ve got Jen so we should win no problem.” Soda said eyeing me. “If only you knew pretty boy.” I said just loud enough for him to hear. He glared at me and I smiled brightly causing him to smile. “Okay, you all know the plan.” Darry said but then looked at me. “Except for you. Basically we just block them from getting to me and then one person goes out for a pass.” Darry explained. I gave him a weird. “It’s simple but effective.” He said defending himself. “I’ve got a better idea. They’re probably gonna put Johnny on me because they don’t think I’m that good. I start on the left side of the field then come up behind you Darry. You hand off the ball to me I’ll continue running right and when I get to the sideline I’ll run straight down it to the end zone.” I said and they all nodded. “Sounds good, but doesn’t Johnny know all your plays.” Dal said. “Nope we only toss a football back and forth.” I said smiling brightly. “Alright let’s do this.” I shouted and we all clapped once indicating we were ready.  We all went into our positions and sure enough Johnny was put on me. I smirked as the ball was hiked. I ran around the back of Darry and towards the right sideline. Steve was standing there to stop me. I faked right and then went left around him. He dove right so now I was in the clear for the end zone. I spiked the ball as my team cheered. “Well we’re doomed.” Sodapop said. I smirked. The game continued and my team won big time. Soda’s team didn’t even score. That’ll teach them to underestimate a girl. I scored most of the points on our team. We were walking back to the house and Dal was carrying me on his back. “Johnny did you know Jennie was that good at football?” Soda asked. “If I say yes are you gonna hit me?” Johnny asked. “Maybe.” Soda replied. “Yes, I knew she was good at football.” Johnny stated and looked at me. Steve wacked him upside the head, causing me to laugh and put my face in the crook of Dal’s neck. “I shoulda known that was gonna happen.” Johnny muttered rubbing his head. “Wait Jennie, where’s your skateboard?” Two-bit asked and my eyes widened. “Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.” I said, jumping off Dal’s back and running towards the park. Ponyboy comes from around the corner, on my skateboard. I stared at him in awe as I stopped running. As he skated by me he grabbed my waist and threw me onto his back. “I didn’t know you could skateboard.” I whispered. “Yea, well…” He said not finishing his sentence. We neared the gang who were all smirking. “We’ll see you guys back at the house.” I shouted as we passed them. “Speed up.” I whispered to Ponyboy and sure enough he did. The tips of his ears grew red. We arrived home in about three minutes compared to twenty. Darry wasn’t home yet, he had to go to the store. “How’d you remember my skateboard?” I asked as we walked in him still carrying me. “Well I don’t really know, I just kinda remembered that you left it there.” He said dropping me on the couch and he sat down next to me. “Well thank you. I think it’s awesome that you can skateboard. I have a skateboarding buddy.” I said nudged his arm. Pony blushed and looked down smiling. The phone then rang and I got up to answer it. “Hello, Curtis residents, Jennie speaking.” I said into the receiver. “Hey Jennie, oh my god it is so nice to hear your voice.” It was Shaun. “SHAUN!” I shouted at him a huge smile breaking out on my face. “Happy birthday baby.” He said and my smile grew. “You remembered!” I said surprised. “Of course I did, you’re my best friend.” He said laughing a little, “So what did you get?” “Sodapop, Steve, and Two-Bit got me some beanies, Dallas got me a switchblade, Ponyboy got me a football, and Johnny gave me a skateboard.” I said. “Are you wearing a helmet while skateboarding?” He asked. “No of course not, do you know anything about me?” I said and I heard Shaun sigh. “I know everything about you, darling, but you’re gonna get hurt one of these days.” He said. “You have to stop babying me Shaun, oh what time is it over there?” I asked, looking at the clock. It was only five o’clock here. “Umm… It’s around midnight or one o’clock in the morning.” He said plainly. “Oh my god, why didn’t you tell me you have to get some sleep.” I said and heard him laugh. “Alright Jennie, see you in a couple weeks. I love you.” He said and I smiled again. “Love you too, Shaun. See you soon.” I said and hung up. I looked over to the couch to see Ponyboy gone and then I heard his bedroom door close. I went over and knocked on the door. “Ponyboy what’s wrong?” I asked. There was no answer. I opened the door a crack and poked my head in. Ponyboy was lying on his back looking at the ceiling. I entered the room completely and shut the door. “Ponyboy what’s wrong?” I asked but he turned his head away from me. “Come on tell me what’s wrong? Maybe I can help.” He still didn’t look at me or answer. “Ponyboy…” I said trailing off. This was stinging me. Ponyboy would always tell me what was wrong. Why not this time? I was always there for him, what did I do to change that? “You know what, a la mierda.” I said, throwing my hands up in the air and began to walk back to the door. The last part translated to fuck it. I was done dealing with whatever it was he was doing. “Wait.” He said causing me to stop and turn back to him. I could see tears beginning to form in his eyes. “I have something to tell you.”

OOOOO...... Cliffhanger sort of!!!! What is Pony going to tell her??? I'll update later so don't worry if you want to know. If you know good Spanish and my translation is wrong please correct me. I need some ideas of what Ponyboy and Johnny can get Jennie for Christmas. From Ponyboy I don't want it to be anything too cheesy like jewelry or something like that and from Johnny I don't really have any specifics so if you think of something leave it in the comments!!!!
