YOU couldn't believe that you had cheated on your husband, a British officer, with John Laurens, an American.
You didn't mean for it to happen, but with your husband in England with the woman he had been cheating on you with, and you drunk in America, things had just escalated quite quickly.
John Laurens was a friend of Alexander Hamilton, who was a friend of your friend, Angelica Schuyler, whom you had met when she had moved to London to live with her new husband, and your husband's friend, John Church. She hadn't lived there very long before she returned to America to be with her sister after Alexander had an affair with Maria Reynolds. And, a few weeks later, you had followed her when you found out that your husband had been cheating on you with your sister, (Y/S/N). You and Angelica's sister, Elizabeth, had both been cheated on, which was why, when you wrote to Angelica explaining the situation, she wrote back to tell you that Eliza was allowing you to stay with her and her children in her house.
But now, you were pregnant, and one thing was certain: it wasn't your husband's baby.

"It was the least I could do," she replied. "And call me Eliza."
