- Lord Durham was Governor General and high commissioner of British North America. He was sent to Canada to set up an inquiry into the rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada.

-Lord Durham proposed that Upper and Lower Canada should be united in a common assembly and that a form of responsible government should be set up, as well as having the politicians elected by voters instead of appointed.

-The British government rejected Lord Durham's recommendations because they were afraid that a responsible government in Canada would weaken the power and control of the British Empire.

-Canada would not have a responsible government until 1848, when two politicians LaFontaine and Baldwin (I didn't write their first names down, sorry) joined forces and formed the first responsible government council, which is now called the cabinet.

-The first Reciprocity Treat was signed in 1854, it was a free trade deal between Canada and the US. The US terminated it in 1864 in hopes of forcing B.C. into becoming a part of the States. The second was signed 1911, though some Canadians opposed it because they feared Americanization.
