The first time Kristen cuts herself hurts the most. That is because she doesn't know what she is doing.
She is scared to hit an artery. She has heard that if she does so, she may bleed to death.
But she doesn't want that.
She just wants to forget about the world.
So she makes a scratch with the razor. It's not even that near her wrist. But it still stings.

For a moment, she doesn't want to live for the day she'll have to say goodbye to her school. True, she has no friends anymore. And she is pretty bad at school. But it's the only place that makes her feel normal.
