Gee

You play beautifully, Georgia

Put that tongue back in your mouth, Georgia James!

The chicken parmigiana with a salad. No tomato.

You two were like brother and sister growing up.

Hello... is this Georgia? Edna's granddaughter? This is St Leonards hospital.

I finally let out a loud scream, kicking my legs and entangling them in the sheets. She wasn't here. Nonna wasn't here anymore. She was gone, in Heaven. With my parents.

She wasn't here.

I let out another scream, finally feeling the wetness on my cheeks.

"Georgia!" a voice shouted from the door and I shut up, panting for air as I shuddered with each cry.

I rolled over slowly, my heart aching with the resonating words in my head. I glanced at the door. The Wellington brothers stood there, watching over me carefully. I stared tiredly at them, trying to calm my breathing, as they looked worriedly back at me.

Matt whispered, "I'm here, Gee."

My guardian angel walked softly into the room, his brother backing away quietly. Matt slid onto my bed and took a hold of my hand.

Tears leaked from my eyes as he began rubbing his thumb across the back of my hand. I sniffed and rubbed my free hand across my eyes.

I sat up, "Matt... I need to tell you something."

He raised a careful eyebrow, staring at me carefully, "Was... was it Nonna?"

"No," I shook my head, then froze, "I mean, yes, but that's not what this is about."

With his own free hand, he caught a lone tear that trailed down my cheek.

I leant my cheek into his hand before he could move it away.

There was a relaxing silence before he asked, "What's up, Gee?"

"I-I... want to ask you something before I tell you something."

"Yeah?" he asked, his beautiful brown eyes curiously watching my own.

I chewed my bottom lip before finalising my idea, "Do you remember what you said to me in our first Music class together since you got back?"

Matt's eyes softly lit up and he nodded, "Of course. I said I loved you."

A feeling of safety enveloped me quickly. But how could he just say it so casually?

"D-did you mean it?" I stuttered.

Matt's eyebrows furrowed. He nodded again, "I've never lied to you, Georgia."

"And..." I winced, "If you said that now, would you be lying?"

Matt gave me a small smile before separating our hands. My stomach dropped at the loss of touch.

He murmured, "Wait here."

He exited my room. I felt hollow.

Downstairs, I could hear a loud knock at the front door. Zoe shouted for someone to open it. Mitch walked past my door. I waited a minute or two longer before acknowledging the fact that Matt had left me in here. I sighed and stood up, heading to the wardrobe to find my dressing gown.

I had finished tying it around my waist by the time Matt came back in. He was carrying a thick hardbound book in his hands.

I stared at the familiarity of it before it clicked, "Is that our scrapbook from when we were younger?"
