Chapter 4

After several miles of walking, they came to an emporium run by someone named Aunty Em who invited them inside after they fed her some story about getting lost after separating from their circus caravan. " Cosi tanto cibo." Sam muttered when she saw all the food laid out before them, and Percy glanced at her in confusion. 

" You speak Italian? " Aunty Em asked, not at all surprised and Sam nodded. " Si, my mother taught me."

While they ate, Aunty Em told them about how long ago she had been in love, but an evil women had done something which had left her with no one but her two sisters, but even they were gone now. Annabeth started to act weird as she suggested they should go, but Aunty Em stopped their exit by asking for a quick photo. " Um, I'm not really-" Sam started to say but was cut off as Grover and Percy suddenly pulled her and Annabeth over for a photo but as Aunty started to remove the veil that his her face, Annabeth suddenly knocked Sam to the ground as she screamed. " Look away."

Sam vanished just as she had done during capture the flag, and fled away from the elderly women who had revealed herself to be Medusa, the shadows hid her from view and allowed her to take cover behind a line of statues. She could hear Annabeth and Grover yelling at Percy not to look, and run away. She caught movement as Grover flew at Medusa with a tree branch. 

Using the shadows, Sam made her way over to Percy and Annabeth as Percy took off Medusa's head with one clean swing of his sword, Riptide. " Friendly." She cried when Percy nearly attacked her as she appeared next to him.

While Percy, Annabeth and Grover went to plan their next move, Sam went to the fountain and glanced inside with a smirk when she saw all the glittering gold.

When she joined the others, Percy was stuffing Medusa's head in a box. " Where did you go?" Grover asked and Sam held up a plastic bag filled with a bunch of glittering drachmas. " I don't think she'll miss them that much, plus we're gong to need them if we're going to get into the Underworld." She said before she turned and left them all to stare at each other in silence.

They boarded a train the next day, and Sam spent most of the long train ride with her head phones in her ears, and her eyes watching the compass on her wrist spin wildly as it struggled to keep track of Luke's location. She caught Annabeth watching it at one point, and pulled the sleeve of her jacket down to hide it from view, before turning to lean her head against the glass with her eyes closed as she began to fiddle with her locket.

Annabeth decided that she wanted to check out the golden gate bridge while she had the chance, and while Percy and Grover were all for going with her, Sam wasn't all that excited to travel into a place that she knew she wasn't welcome.

It wasn't long after they had disappeared when Sam felt eyes on her, and turned to find a transparent figure standing a few feet away. " Daughter of Hades." The ghost said in a raspy voice and Sam let out a sigh before throwing a glance toward the arch, and walking away to find a secluded area so that the ghost could say what it wanted.

Once they were out of sight, Sam turned to the ghost with a frown." Well, get it over with."

" Your father," The ghost rasped. " wants the boy brought to him for questioning."

" What interest does he have in the son of Poseidon?"

" That is no concern of yours. Bring the boy, and he will see to it that you are rewarded, refuse and you will rot in the fields of-"

" Yeah, yeah I got the message, you can go now." Sam said before walking through the ghost, causing it to fade and disappear back to wince it came.
