Just in case anyone is confused about the difference in age between Sam and Percy. They are the same age, but Sam was born on the 20th of July (to show that Hades was with Sam's mother during the months that Persephone is not in the underworld), and Percy was born on the 18th of August. At the beginning of the battle of the labyrinth chapters, both Sam and Percy are 14, but by the end of these chapters, they are both 15. Sam turned 15 in the chapter when she gets her compass fixed.

Chapter 43

" Should you ever need me, press this button and I will be there in the blink of an eye." His voice echoed as Sam was pulled back to the day she got the musical device she carried with her everywhere. " Like that will ever happen." Sam had scoffed, thinking that it was ridiculous that she would ever need his help. She was regretting those words now, as she sat on the porch of the big house. After hitting the button on her IPod, Apollo's sun chariot had switched into autopilot and come to her rescue; it was a feature she had thought she would never use. Gods weren't allowed to help mortals, but after the events that taken place when she was 10, she knew she could always count on him.

In the distance, she could see the fire from the funeral pyre; Percy hadn't made it after the volcano had exploded. She should have been down there with the rest of the camp, but she couldn't do it. It was true that people died everyday, but this one hit her the hardest. Percy had been her friend, the one who she had gone on adventures with, helped save the world countless times over, and had truly come to trust.

They didn't even have a body to burn, the lava had burned him away and it had been so quick that Sam hadn't even felt him go.

She looked over as Jacy approached her, her eyes full of concern. "Are you coming down?"

" In a minute." Sam replied and Jacy nodded, but didn't leave, instead she sat beside the daughter of Hades in silence. The dark haired girl Sam had met so long ago had changed, her hair was shorter now, her eyes were darker and full of more experience then of two years ago when she had befriended her during the chariot races that they still teamed up on.

" Why dont you go on ahead, I'll be down there soon." Sam told her as she got up and started down toward the beach. " Okay" Jacy muttered watching her go.

Sam stared at the water as she walked along the beach, but after a while she sank to the sandy ground ad pulled her knees up to her chin. Death was a common thing in her life, it always had been. People were born, they lived and then they died, this was the way the world worked, and Sam was accepting of that, but on occasion, she found herself suffering through the loss and grief that came with the passing of a loved one.

She wondered though, why it hurt more to lose Percy then it had to lose Bianca. Was it because she knew him better? Cared for him more? Sam didn't know, and she wasn't sure if she ever wanted to know the answer.

She made her way toward the amphitheater, and found a seat next to a girl with really short blonde hair. With all her talks with Annabeth, she recognized the girl as a daughter of Athena; the girl was also a friend of Jacy's so she knew her name. Ariel Thorne. Sam often saw them training together, or teaming up when it came to capture the flag, the two of them worked well together. Sam often saw her carrying a short double edged sword during capture the flag.

Sam had arrived just as Chiron was finishing his speech, and admitting that it was time to stop waiting for a sign that he was still alive. Annabeth had just placed his shroud on the fire, when she turned to face the crowd, her eyes grew wide and her face turned as red as the flames of the pyre. Everyone turned and Sam's eyes narrowed at the sight of the son of the sea god, who had just crashed his own funeral.

She was going to kill him.

That is, if Annabeth didn't get to him first.
