Chapter 62

Sam sat on the steps of the empire state building as Percy went to greet everyone as they climbed out of the white delivery vans; 40 campers in all. This was the only defense keeping Olympus safe down here. Percy tried to give command of the group to Chiron, and Sam smiled as Chiron told Percy that he was the leader. Chiron left to find more help, while the rest of them followed Percy into the lobby of the building, where a security guard was reading a magazine. He tried to pretend that he didn't see the weapons they were carrying, but none of them were falling for it. Sam tossed him a golden drachma as she was waiting for her turn to go up to Olympus, and the guard pocketed it without a second glance.

Once they were all through the elevator, they followed Percy through the streets of Olympus and to the palace of Zeus, which was eerily empty. Hestia greeted them when they reached the throne room, and Sam pretended not to know about what Percy had done in the Underworld. Percy collapsed and everyone stared at him in confusion as he began to act strangely. Percy started to ask Hestia for an audience with Zeus, when Hermes appeared beside her.

Hestia excused herself and Hermes greeted Percy with a annoyed tone in his voice, and Sam tried to be as invisible as possible. Percy repeated his request and Hermes stared at him with cold eyes, causing him to make the quick decision of telling the group to have a look around the city. Sadly, Sam found herself left standing alone next to Annabeth, who she tried to hide behind.

" My lord, Kronos is going to attack New York, you must suspect that. My mother must have foreseen it."

" Your mother. Dont get me started on your mother, young lady, shes the reason I'm here at all. Zeus didn't want any of us to leave the front line, but your mother kept pestering him nonstop. Its a trap. It's a diversion. blah, blah, blah. She wanted to come back herself, but Zeus was not going to let his number one strategist leave his side while we're battling Typhon, and so naturally, he sent me to talk to you."

" But it is a trap. Is Zeus blind?" Annabeth insisted and thunder rolled above them.

They tried to convince Hermes, but he explained that without Poseidon and Hades, thier powers had been pushed to the limit with just typhon's approach. Hermes passed on a few messages from Athena, and Annabeth seemed to understand something they didn't.

Sam thought the conversation was over, until Annabeth tried to apologize for not being able to stop Luke. Sam's face lost all color when Hermes' staff changed form, and Percy tried to step in front of her, but it quickly became useless when he began to grow in size. Percy tried to apologize, but the god's anger only grew with him.

The two snakes on his staff whispered something in his ear, and he returned to normal as his voice broke. " My son, my greatest pride, my poor May."

" We've all made mistakes that we regret" Sam said, speaking up after having been silent the whole time. " All we can do now, is try to make up for it."

Hermes left when Percy tried to ask about May Castellan, and Sam left Percy to comfort Annabeth who had finally unfrozen, and was currently crying at the foot of her mother's throne.

The Stoll brothers passed her on the way out, and told her to go to the viewing area, something had happened; from the way they were moving, it wasn't good.

As they watched Annabeth mess around with a shield like spyglass, Sam suddenly cried out. " Stop, Annabeth, go back a couple blocks."

" What?" Annabeth asked backing it up to show an old gas station. " What street is that?"

" Um, 62nd on 8th avenue, why?." Annabeth

" If every one is asleep..." Sam trailed off before she smirked and turned to the Jacy and Ariel. " I'm going to need your help."
