Jack had work at the ice cream parlor again. He mopped the floor as the bell above the door finally rang. He looked up to see North and Aster.
"Hey guys," Jack greeted.
Aster simply nodded and North boomed, "Mornin' Jack!"
They both sat down at the booth closest to Jack.
"What's up, mate?" Aster asked in his heavy Australian accent.
Jack shrugged. "Work. I got another job. It's in the Norway district at the ice rink. That's all."
"That's quite a drive from here," North commented.
Jack nodded and leaned against the mop handle, "Yeah, there are late nights but the pay is worth it. Enough to buy me gas."
"Is that all you care about? Gas money?" Aster asked.
Jack shrugged.
"You work your butt off, Jack. Why don't you come hang with us?"
"You have jobs too, don't you? Money doesn't grow on bushes."
"There's a difference between working and overworking." Aster pointed out.
"Working is what collage will teach us to do, come on, live a little!" North objected.
Jack chuckled, "As tempting as that sounds, I'll pass. I can't loose this job."
"No one is here, ask if you can leave early."
"It's almost 2:00. That's when my shift ends." Jack pointed out.
"Well, in that case, chocolate shake over here!" North said loudly.
"Banana split for me."
Jack rolled his eyes. "Coming right up."

After his shift was over, the three boys hopped in Aster's nice car and went to Tooth and Sandy's houses. They were both eager to leave and they went to the beach.
It was a tight, uncomfortable ride, but they made it. "Last one in is a rotten Easter egg!" Aster shouted as he hopped out of the car. He ran for the water. Tooth was right behind him and North was trying to catch up. Sandy and Jack grabbed towels and hurried behind.
Tooth didn't quite catch up with Aster, but she was right behind him when they ran into the water.
"Ha! As quick as a bunny!" Aster splashed Tooth.
Tooth splashed back.
North jumped between them and made a huge splash. Jack and Sandy quickly joined them.
After a while, Aster and Sandy were playing volleyball against each other. North was trying to sun bathe, and Tooth and Jack were wading in the water.
"How much have you called Elsa?"
"Only every- wait! How did you-"
He was cut off by the way Tooth was looking at him.
"Fine," he put his hands up in surrender and smiled. "I talk to her almost every night, is that too much?"
"No, because she likes it."
"How do you know that?"
Tooth looked like she had just spilled her biggest secret.
"I wouldn't- I mean- how could I, ha ha ha! Uh," she rambled.
"Spit it out!" Jack pressed.
"Fine, I know her."
"What? How?"
"That job at the ice rink I told you about? It was mine, but I quit."
"Why?"
"It was too cold, I couldn't stand it anymore!" She shivered at the thought.
"Why didn't you tell me you knew her?"
"Because it was much more fun watching you two figure things out yourselves!" Tooth giggled. She playfully punched him in the shoulder.
"Now this is turning into a game for both of us," Jack said.
Tooth smiled, "But you are one of the chess pieces. I'm just observing the game."
Jack pondered this. She was right. It was all up to him as to where he was going with this.
❄❄❄
After their fun day at the beach, they all went to North's place to spend the night. He lived in a huge, old Victorian home in the fairly rich part of town. The street was quiet and peaceful. Jack liked it.
They all gathered in and made themselves comfortable on the couch and floor. They began watching a movie. It was some action film. Jack wasn't too interested and Sandy looked the same. Jack started drifting off.
❄❄❄
"Jack? Jack!" He was startled awake.
"What time is it?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.
"12:30 at night."
"Tooth, why did you wake me up?" He asked in an exasperated and exhausted tone. He whispered it because he saw all of his friends sleeping soundly around the room.
"Your phone won't shut up!" She hoarsely whispered, pointing to it.
He plucked his phone off the coffee table and checked it. 5 missed calls and two texts. Great. He checked to see who it was from.
"What is it?" Tooth asked.
"My mother." Jack answered simply. Crap! He forgot to tell her he was staying at a friend's.
Tooth looked concerned.
"Ugh," Jack hoisted himself up and walked to the kitchen to call his mother back.
The phone didn't even ring a full time before she picked up.
"What the hell, Jack?"
"Happy to hear from you too," Jack said sarcastically.
"Do you have any idea what you've put me through!? I almost called the authorities thinking you were kidnapped!"
"I'm fine, Mom. I'm at North's house. Sorry, I should have called."
"You bet you should have called! Come home this instant, young man!"
Jack cringed.
"Can't it wait till morning so I can get a ride? I'd hate to walk the streets at night."
His mother didn't answer for a while and Jack knew he had her.
"Love you! Night, Mom!" He said quickly and hung up.
He looked through his other missed calls. All were from his mother, except one. Elsa. Elsa had tried to call him. He looked through his texts. One was from his mother and one was from Elsa.
Elsa: I'd like to, uh, talk to u when u have time..
What did that mean? He decided it could wait till morning. He was exhausted and didn't feel like talking to anyone.
