The boat ride home was rather sad. The rocking made you sick, and the suddenness of everything that had happened was finally hitting you. You fed Valerie for the first time, knowing she would be very hungry. Lots of people on the boat came to see her and give their condolences for Hiccup. The more people brought it up, the more miserable you felt. Killing Drago didn't make you feel any better about the whole situation. If anything it made you more conflicted.

About halfway through the ride, Valerie was asleep, which freed up your hands for the time being. Not that you did much beside hug yourself, wishing for Hiccup more than ever in that very moment. His and Vali's makeshift coffins were in the room you were in. You sat next to Hiccup's, hoping somehow this has all been a bad dream, and that you would wake up with him sleeping next to you like he always did. But no matter how many times you pinched yourself, you wouldn't wake up.

You sat for another 15 minutes or so, silently sobbing for the lose of your Hiccup. His last words to you repeating in your head, all the things he would never do playing out like a movie, and all the moments you would wake up alone.

In the creaking of the older boat, you hardly noticed as the door open and shut. When you heard footsteps, you looked up from your position to see your father. His eyes held sorrow for you. Slowly he sat down next to you, putting one of his large arms around your shoulder.

"I know how you feel. Losing your life partner. I'll never forget that day. Your mother was out flying with her dragon. She wanted to show Valka and I some new trick she had learned, and next thing I knew, she missed or slipped. Something went wrong. Her dragon didn't noticed until they were too far apart, and I couldn't reach her in time. The trees where she fell were too thick for the dragons to land, so we had to go on foot. When we found her, we knew their was no chance for her. Pretty much ever bone was broken, your mother's death was quick. I at least thank the gods for that much."

You turned your head slightly to look at the Viking sitting next to you. His eyes were staring straight ahead of him, with some tears building up at the thought of your mother.

"Why didn't you tell me?" He turned his gaze from the door straight ahead of him to meet your eyes. "What do you mean?" You took in a deep breath before continuing. "If you could see when people die, why didn't you tell me about Hiccup?" You couldn't help it when your voice cracked a little bit. Your father sighed and rubbed his eyes a little, continuing to stare straight ahead like before. "I knew you would ask that sooner or later. I wanted to, but it... it's not easy just coming out of the blue to say that. What was I suppose to do?"

"Maybe we could have prevented it?" He shook his head, still refusing to look at you. "No, it doesn't work that way. If he didn't go and die at the battle something else would have happened to him. And you might not have been there to say goodbye." Your eyes began to fill with tears again, and you felt anger toward your father for not telling you about Hiccup. But at the same time, you knew what he did was probably best. You just didn't want to accept it.

A silence began to build up between you two. Then Valerie began to stir from her crib, so you got to your feet and walked over to her. Carefully, you picked her up and held her to your chest. "Why did he have to die?" You turned and looked at the other Viking again, this time he had his eyes were trained on you. "Things always happen for a reason. We just have to make the best of them until we figure it out."
