--- KAT ---

When her train finally resumed its journey, Kat knew she wouldn’t make it to London in time.  So when it reached the next station, forlornly she got off.

As she stood on the platform waiting for a train to take her back home, Kat went through all the reasons that auditioning was a stupid idea anyway.  She wasn’t pretty enough.  She didn’t have star quality.  Her musical style was ethereal and quirky.  How could she fit into some generic five-piece girl group?

But, they’d called her for an audition hadn’t they?  Someone had seen her clip on YouTube and gone yes, we want you.   We think you’ve got something.  Plus it gave her such a thrill to read the positive comments people posted about her clip online.

“Great vibe.”

“This rocks.”

“Ur a superstar Katya K.”

“Keep posting more tunes.”

“Hey, you big nosed bitch.  Wouldn’t screw you if you were…”

Kat had deleted that one and blocked the user – kenny_slick.

Maybe she should try and get to London after all.  She looked across the station and saw her train was still there, held up because of all the earlier chaos.

What would her free-spirited mama have done…?

Train home? Or London?

Train home? Or London?

Big nosed bitch?  Or superstar Katya K?

Her mama would definitely have leapt on that train and headed for the bright lights.  Kat swung round, colliding straight into a businessman behind her.

“Oi!  Watch it!”

“Sorry.  Sorry,” said Kat, as she scrambled past him.

She ran up the stairs and over the bridge, all the while the train doors were still open.  If she could just get to the first carriage.  Panting, she raced down the stairs on the other platform.  As she leapt down the final three steps and bolted towards the train, there was a beeping sound and the doors slammed shut.  She was too late.

As the train slowly edged out of the station, Kat could have kicked herself.  Why had she got off the train in the first place?  Why couldn’t she just have believed in herself for once?

Kat knew she could wait for another train to London, but the moment had passed and she was back to seeing herself as plain old Katya Kaminski with the wonky nose and fuzzy hair.

She looked up at the information board.  The next train back home was in six minutes.  Slowly Kat trudged back over the bridge, suddenly missing her mama more than ever.
