"Oh my, Viola! An actual ball! You're going to be transformed into a beautiful woman! William is going to cry when he sees you, believe me."
I raise an eyebrow at my mother, who snatched the letter out of my hands as soon as my eyes skimmed the last sentence. You'd have thought I'd be the most excited one. Apparently not. "What do you mean, 'transformed into a beautiful woman'? Aren't mothers supposed to say their daughters are always beautiful?"
She takes a pointed look at my Winnie the Pooh pyjamas and cringes. "Yes, well, we can't give out compliments all the time otherwise they aren't valid enough."
"You're so mean." I say, pouting. "Be right back, just going to go and cry myself to sleep."
She laughs wholeheartedly, enveloping me into her arms. "I'm joking, my love. You're always beautiful in my eyes."
My lips curve into a smile.
"Only you'll be even more beautiful when you go to this ball." She snickers as she waltzes down the hallway, singing something I have no doubt she made up.
As I start to feel relief that her crazy outburst has finished, I hear her tell Dad, gushing so much I'm worried she'll pass out from a lack of oxygen.
He merely replies, "Nice."
She makes a noise of complaint. "Nice?! Nice?! It's more than nice! Why, Vinderella and prince William shall go to the ball!"
Dad groans. "Emily. Please calm down. You're scaring me."
