Gustav was ecstatic when he recieved a letter from Dagur the Deranged, inviting him to Berserker Island to be a warrior apprentice. It didn't take him long to pack a few things and be on his way. After bidding his mother farewell, he and Fanghook were off. The whole flight there, he imagined the status he would recieve from completeing this apprenticeship. He couldn't wait to impress Astrid with his new title that he'd earn.

And when he arrived, he was met at the stables by the Berserker Chief. "Gustav! Welcome!" Dagur shouted in greeting. He threw his arms out to express his excitement.

But Gustav's eyes caught a glimpse of something moving behind the Chief. He leaned to the left a bit, peering behind Dagur. A beautiful teen-age girl stood, a hand on her hip and a serious look on her face. Long, ginger hair was braided down behind her, and her piercing green eyes seemed to look right into his soul. All at once, impressing Astrid was onlld news. Sure, Astrid was pretty, but this girl was a goddess.

"Woah..." Gustav muttered through a dreamy smile, "who are you?"

The girl rasied an eyebrow at him, but before she could answer, Gustav lost balance and fell sideways onto the ground. He quickly stood back up, a confident look on his face as he composed himself. "I'm Gustav," he introduced with a dramatic feature to himself, "the first Berserker apprentice."

The girl smirked and crossed her arms. "And I'm Jadelyn," she responded, casually swinging around her bow staff, "full Berserker Warrior, Dragon Rider, and third in command here on Berserker Island." She was obviously trying to embarrassed Gustav, and it worked.

He laughed nervously, cheeks growing pink. "Oh, that's, uh...a lot more, impressive," he remarked awkwardly.

Jadelyn laughed and rolled her eyes, moving to stand beside Dagur. She crossed her arms as Dagur leaned his arm on her shoulder. "Jade's my and Heather's younger sister; our most powerful young warrior," he explained proudly, "she'll be overseeing your training for the next few weeks."

Gustav smiled wide. "Oh, that's okay!" He assured. Then, waltzing casually over to the girl, he added coolly, "I think you'll like what you see..if you don't already."

Again, Jadelyn raised her eyebrows. She'd never been so forwardly flirted with before, due to there not being many younger boys on the island, and wasn't sure how to respond. She quickly assessed Gustav and came to a conclusion; he was someone to consider. A bit cocky, but nothing she couldn't deal with. She smiled at him crookedly and wacked him hard in the side.

Gustav squirmed as he fell to the ground. Jade couldn't help but laugh. "You should probably work with him on blocking, first," she told Dagur, still laughing.

Quickly, Gustav scrambled to his feet once again. He straightened his helmet and puffed out his chest. He was going to impress Jadelyn if it was the last thing he'd do. He was ready to begin.

Two weeks had gone by. Gustav was doing well with his training, but not brilliant. Therefore, Jade was not impressed, as he'd promised she would be. However, she did grow fond of him. He was no warrior prince, but he was funny and cute. And there was no doubting that he liked her.

Even her brother had been catching on to the friendship growing between them. And so, he decided to leave Jade in charge of his combat training for this day.

Yet another sparring round ended with Jadelyn standing victoriously above the fallen Gustav. She poking him rather roughly in the shoulder with her staff before letting him stand. "Ow!" He complained, holding his shoulder in pain.

Jadelyn rolled her eyes and looked at him. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she appoligized sarcastically. "You want to be a Berserker, right? Grow up," she teased him.

Gustav brushed the pain aside and stood tall. He readied his sword while Jade had her back turned. With a devious grin, right as she looked his way again, he tackled her to the ground with a battle cry.

Completely caught by surprise, Jade had no time to react. All she could do was take the blow as it sent her backwards into the grass. She grunted in pain at the impact, which was only made worse by the extra weight of the one who'd landed on her.

"Hah! Who's a warrior now?" Gustav gloated, "that's right, Gustav!"

Jadelyn couldn't help but smile in amusement, even if she was frustrated that he'd gotten her. "I didn't call spar," she told him, "so this doesn't count."

But Gustav didn't let his pride fall. He sat up, still holding her down with his weight. He put his hands on his hips. "Oh yeah?" He asked with a smirk, "because in a real battle, no one calls spar. And you'd be dead."

Taking this opportunity, Jade thrust Gustav off of her and rolled onto him. His face was of pure shock when he found they had switched positions. "Well, if you gloat like that in a real battle," she began with her own smirk, "you'd be dead."

Gustav sighed. "Alright, fine, I get it," he huffed, "now get off of me."

Jadelyn smiled in pride and she stood back up. But yet again, she found herself tackled to the ground by the hyper boy. She yelled out in surprise. This time, Gustav had her arms pinned down at her sides; he was finally victorious. "Hah!" He shouted.

He looked down into Jade's deep green eyes. Her braid was a tossled mess from the brawl, strands sticking out in a messy but cute way. He could only stare for a while, causing her face to redden. Though she would ultimately deny it ever happened, Jade was blushing under the older boy's gaze of attraction.

"A-alright, truce," she muttered in a fluster.

Gustav chuckled as he stood, holding a hand out to help Jadelyn up after him. Once they were standing, Jade ended the training session. "Go take a bath, you sweat like a boar today," she insulted him playfully.

"I could say the same to you," Gustav retorted in a teasing voice. But at Jadelyn's warning glare, he added quickly and nervously, "but I won't."

Jade smiled in satisfaction. "Good," she stated, "meet here again tomorrow at sunrise. Don't be late again." She stepped closer to him in an almost suggestive way.

"I-I won't," Gustav stuttered as she neared him. Then, something soft graced his cheek. The small suction noise of a kiss popped next to his ear. Jadelyn had kissed his cheek. Before he could say anything, she was already walking away. He couldn't wait to continue training the next day.
