Everyone in the dragon hunting tribe knew Viggo as the harsh, demanding, and sometimes brutal man that he was. He was their chief, a man who didn't take 'no' for an answer. Not to mention, he was the most manipulative person in the archipelago. His reputation was strong and solid...which only made made it all the more amusing when you would catch him alone.

By himself, when no one else was around, Viggo could be quite sensitive. You only knew this because you'd been best friends with him since you were both young. As a child, Viggo was always second place to his stronger, more Viking-like brother, Ryker. Viggo, himself, was always softer, preferring to talk things over rather than fight physically. And in a way, he was still very much like that.

Contrary to what many believed, Viggo had never killed a single living creature. He only ever even rose to become chief to prove to his father that he could be just as tough as Ryker. So it made sense that Viggo wanted to keep his soft side a secret. But he couldn't hide from you, you knew him too well.

"Viggo," you called as you entered his tent. You spotted him in the back, hunched over his desk and trying to figure out the Dragon Riders' next move. You smiled softly and approached him. "You shouldn't stress yourself out so much," you told him in a worried tone.

"I'm not stressing myself out," Viggo argued in irritation. But you saw right through this. And he knew that you did, so he sighed and looked up. "What can I do for you?" He asked with a kind smile, pushing away his maps.

"You can leave this place for the night and come on a walk with me," you told him playfully.

Viggo couldn't help but chuckle at your enthusiasm. "Alright...I suppose I have been needing a break lately," he admitted.

"You really should try to relax more often," you insisted as the two of you left the tent together.

"(Y/n), you know I can't fo that, especially not now," Viggo told you with a sad look on his face, "these dragon riders are becoming a real problem...I need to be strong for the tribe."

You sighed and rolled you eyes. "That's not what this is about," you stated, showing that he couldn't fool you, "the tribe is strong; you're still just trying to prove yourself." When Viggo didn't answer, you knew you were right. "But you already have proven yourself," you reminded him, "I just don't want you to lose yourself to this false image you've created."

Viggo gave you a heartwarming smile. "That won't happen, so long as you're here to remind me of who I am," he insisted.

The two of you walked until you were on the outskirts of the island and far from the base. In the light of the moon, you both stood in the sand of the beach. Viggo sighed in relief, making you smile. "That's what I thought," you teased him, poking his shoulder playfully, "this is just what you needed."

Viggo couldn't help but blush as he avoided your eye contact. The truth was, his feelings for you had grown over the years. And that was what kept him weak. Yet, in this one sense, he didn't mind being weak. You already knew that he was, and you loved him for it anyways.

Viggo had vowed a long time ago never to change, because he never wanted to be a man that you couldn't recognize. The man who felt too much and got stressed too easily. The man who needed breaks to just enjoy life with his friend whom he'd grown to love. The man who still needed a shoulder to cry on every now and again because holding up such an image could be so difficult sometimes. That was the Viggo you knew.

Feeling his emotions well up inside, he looked away from you quickly. You noticed this immediately and frowned, peering around into his face. "Viggo.." You called gently, "what's the matter?"

Viggo tried to hide his fluster with a small laugh. He met your eyes again and answered, "I just don't know what I'd do if I ever lost you."

You smiled sweetly and tilted your head a bit. "You won't lose me," you insisted, "we made a pact, when we were eleven, remember?"

Again, Viggo laughed. "Yes, yes..how could I forget?" He recalled the fond moment from your childhood and recited what you'd promised each other long ago, "we'll always have each others backs."

"And last time I checked, 'always' doesn't expire," you added with a giggle. You then opened your arms and wrapped Viggo into a meaningful hug.

He immediately returned it, squeezing his eyes shut as he let your warmth comfort him. When he felt you begin to let go all too soon, he kept his arms around your waist. "Just a while longer," he whispered.

His soft voice sent chills through your body. Little did Viggo know, that you returned his growing feelings. So you shyly tightened your grip around him, smiling into the hug. And after a long silence, he finally let you go. But his hands remained delicately on your waist. You were both shocked and excited by the look of love in Viggo's eyes as he gazedinto your moon-lit face.

"I have an idea," he suggested with a smile, "how about we extend that pact..from 'always', to 'til death do us part'?"

Your eyes widened at the sudden suggestion, but your grin betrayed your feelings. Viggo felt his confidence rise when you smiled so brightly and decided to go on. "(Y/n), I've fallen in love with you," he admitted, "you've stuck by my side for decades now, through everything the world's thrown our way....and I'd like that to continue for the rest of our lives. I'm always going to need you..and, if you love me, too...."

"Viggo..." You sighed happily, trailing off. With a joyous laugh you leaned up and kissed him gently. "Of course I love you; I thought I'd made it obvious enough," you teased.

Viggo blushed at the sudden kiss, heart fluttering violently in his chest. He finally admitted his feelings, and it has been worth it. He couldn't wait to start this new kind of relationship with you.
