This was thought up while watching the "Area 51" episode for the Mysteries Decoded TV series.
The supposed aircraft at Area 51 was released by an alien race as a practical joke and as a way to determine if we (humans) would be allowed and be introduced to the intergalactic alien/extraterrestrial community.
The supposed UFOs weren't actually the aircraft used by the extraterrestrial they were just created for the practical joke and if we weren't able to determine that they were fake and not actually used craft then we wouldn't be introduced to the community. The released UFOs are much less advanced and completely different than the actual crafts used by the alien race.
And the supposed "artifacts" given to us by them were actually children's toys for their species and those were the most common toys.
