In this story idea, the truth about Medusa and other related myths and legends from human history was separated from truth and myth. This happened after aliens came to Earth.
Also, in this story idea, only one thing from the myth about Medusa was half-right since the other things changed throughout history (think of it like the movie known as Jack the Giant Slayer from 2013).
Medusa did change people to stone but not how it was explained in myth.
It actually came from a solution that was basically squirted on their prey from the eye and mouth.
This eventually turned into a stone-like coating on the body but when fully formed the coating becomes half-inch separated from the body to give the person wiggle room and the ability to not suffocate.
The species was created by an extraterrestrial race to give them an edge in hunting.
