Once upon a time, there was a teenage guy who wanted to court his classmate. So as not to be hurt by a possible rejection in the process of courting, He asked the gal if he has the chance to win her heart.  The gal simply responded, "Edi subukan mo (Then try it)." Upon hearing this, the guy did not anymore proceed because he is not certain that the girl will accept his love.

In our world today, the issue of security is heightened. When people want to secure their establishments, they put many closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. When people want to be secured in the programs they enroll to, they should have a 30-day guarantee. Or when people want to be secured in the gadgets they buy, they ought to have a year-long warrantee.

The gospel for today (Lk 10:1-9) tempts us to think that God is foolish in sending apostles as sheep (without staff, extra tunic, or others items of security) who will proclaim the kingdom of God among wolves. But we have to remember that wherever the sheep is, there is the shepherd who will protect it in every step of the way and when the wolves attack the sheep, it is a direct assault to the shepherd.

On our end, that shepherd is God. May we submit our hearts to Him so that we can stand secure amidst the oppositions and contradictions we have in the world. Amen.
