On the 31st of December, a journalist walked around the city asking people from different walks of life about their preparation for the New Year. The journalist asked a businessman, a young professional, and a homeless guy. The businessman responded, "I consult fengshui experts for me to have a prosperous year." "I hit the gym to be fit this year," says the young professional. Then the homeless guy answered the same question of the journalist, "I may not know how to prepare for the coming year, but God will definitely be there for me."
Preparation implies that its main purpose is for the coming of an important event or person. Whenever we take events or people for granted, we miss the chance to see the significance to be ready for them. It is even ironic that sometimes the right people and golden opportunities are up for grabs yet we choose to turn a blind eye to them.
In today's gospel (Jn. 1:29-34), John the Baptist was fortunate to recognize Jesus coming towards him. This good fortune of John was a product of his life-long preparation for the coming of the Messiah; so much so that when John met Jesus, he immediately knew that Jesus is God and that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. May we never fail to prepare so that each of us will be able to encounter Jesus who always encounter us even in the most ordinary circumstances of our lives. Amen.
