"I'm sorry, who?"
"Conan Gray... YouTuber? Composed the song Idle Town that made him blow up?" Christine looked at me curiously.
Am I the only one who doesn't know this guy??
"Uh, I've heard of him from my friend. She says he just released his EP, but I don't really listen to him."
I tell Christine as she nods in understanding."It's good that you know a few things about him because you're gonna have to get to know him more." the pale bubbly woman chimed with an excited smile.
"I'm sorry, I don't think I'm getting your point." I said, genuinely confused of everything that was happening for the past 3 days.
"You see, Prairie, as I have told you, our bassist recently resigned, and Conan's going on tour for his EP. Apparently that bassist was also the same bassist who was supposed to play for him."
"Oh."
Shitbucket.
"So what do I do now?" I say with a hint of worry laced in my voice. "All you have to do is audition and fill out a few paperworks- which is what you're doing right now- since I already have your resume. The auditions will take place this Friday at around 2 pm." Christine explains.
"I hope you'll be there. You really don't have to worry since Conan has seen you play, and he thinks you're really good for the job!" she tries to cheer me up.
Hold on, did she say he's seen me play?! What the hell!
If I had known he was there I would have given so much more effort and not mess up because of that stupid boy I spilled milkshake on—
"So will you be there?" Christine asks once more and snaps me out of my train wreck of thoughts."Of course! Don't sweat it." I reply.
"Oh and just a little favor. Do you happen to have a picture of this Conan Gray with you? Just so I know how he looks like. I hope I'm not being creepy." I ramble on as she just laughs at my flustered state.
"Don't worry about it! Here's a pict—" Christine was interrupted by her ringing cellphone. "I have to pick this up. I'll see you on the auditions, Prairie. Take care!" she says as she quickly heads out the door of the cafe bringing the documents I had just finished filling out.
I waved her goodbye and exited the coffee shop as well, seeing as I don't have anything else to do here anymore. I drove back to my apartment and began my research of this Conan Gray that almost everyone in my life is talking about.
God I feel like a grandma.
On the way to my apartment door I see that Alisa had retweeted yet another tweet from Conan Gray himself saying, "see y'all at the auditions :)".
Okay twitter's starting to get weird. It's like the FBI is spying me. I mean, it's not like they aren't though...
I shook my head at the thought. Once I entered my bedroom I didn't hesitate to drop onto my bed, not bothering to change my clothes. After a few minutes of debating, I did manage to nag myself into putting on my pajamas.
The exhaustion from today's events now kicked in as I lay on my soft bed with my fresh and comfortable clothes. My eyelids start to get heavy but I was still determined to research about this Conan guy. I open Safari and type in his name only to be cursed with the WiFi acting up.
Why do you have to act up now of all occasions??
I didn't want to get out of my bed so I just lay there, staring at the ceiling of my bedroom. My mind wanders back to the curly haired Asian boy.
I didn't know if it was my exhaustion but I recalled how he looked like. Those curly brown locks that I wish to get ahold of, the slit on his right eyebrow, and the tiny freckles on his light colored skin that you wouldn't notice unless you looked close enough.
Get it together, Prairie, you have a boyfriend for goodness' sake!
I snap out of my trance and decide to call Mark instead. I waited for him to pick up but all I could hear was ringing. Just when I've given up hope, his voice answered from the other line. "Hey, what's up, Prairs?"
"Hey" I replied tiredly. "It's just that we haven't been calling each othe—"
"I thought you wanted some alone time?" Mark said, clearly sounding confused. "I know but I was thinking if you wanted to hang out since we weren't able to have that date you said."
"Look, babe, not right now please? These paperworks won't stop increasing unless I work. I'm sorry if I've been a bit distant, okay? Maybe next week this can be over and I can come by your place." he said almost a tad too angrily.
I was taken aback by the tone of his voice as tears started to well up in my eyes. "Oh... okay. I'm sorry for disturbing you. I was gonna tell you some good news but I guess that can wait." I said, trying not to choke on my words as I held back my tears.
"Prairie, babe, please don't be upset. I'm just stressed is all. Now what did you want to tell me?" he says as his voice softens. I start to feel just a bit better.
"I met someone who could get me a job. And it's something I love doing! Mark, Im gonna be a bass player for an indie artist, and they said he's signed to Republic Records. I'm so excited to go on tour with them!"
"You're going on tour with an artist signed to a huge record label, while doing something you love? Prairie that's amazing! I'm so happy for you babe!" Mark exclaims from the other line as I simply laugh at his dorkiness.
"Alright, I have to go now, boss is calling me. See you later Prairs!" Mark says and immediately hangs up before I even got to say goodbye. I was a bit disappointed but at least I got to talk to him.
I checked my phone again and saw that the WiFi was going well now so I scroll through my instagram. I feel my eyes getting even heavier, so I close them and feel myself slowly drifting into sleep.
