JULIE AND CONNIE quietly chatted amongst themselves as they sat in the lunchroom that day. As much as they tried to act as if everything was fine, it wasn't. Everything had changed; even more than it already has. The ducks were falling apart and the tension between Junior Varsity and Varsity could be cut with a knife.

"You think he'll come back?" Julie asked in a quiet voice as she lazily focused her gaze to where she used her fork to subconsciously play around with her pasta. Connie, on the other hand, couldn't eat. Simply, she just chewed her nails due to the consistent worry and thoughts that clouded her head.

"Um.." Connie hummed as she bit off part of her nail, "I don't know... he's not answering my calls.."

Julie grimaced as Connie flicked the nail away before folding her hands together in an orderly manner so she could refrain from biting her fingernails. "Me either.." Julie sighed. The girl couldn't help but find her eyes trail over to the varsity table where the boy she had been looking for was missing. The girl drew her eyes together as she began to look around the lunchroom in concern.

"Um..." Connie began to ask, eyeing Julie in confusion. The brunette girl couldn't help but follow Julie Gaffney's desperate gaze around the room. "What are you looking for-"

Connie found herself slowly stopping as Julie's gaze settled to where the door was. Connie, being incredibly intrigued by her companions sudden flustered state, had turned her gaze towards the door where it landed on a certain upperclassman who the two girls should have despised; though, they really couldn't despise him. Not even if they tried.

"Hey Gaffney" his soft and welcoming voice greeted as he comfortably placed his hands on the table

Connie smirked as Julie's cheeks developed a tint of pink. "Hey Scooter.." she smiled before she bashfully looked down at her lap

With a playful eye-roll, Connie looked up at the brunette junior and tapped on the seat beside her. "Sit," Connie said in a less instructional tone than usual, "I have to talk to you"

Willingly, the boy sat down, causing Julie to send a glare in Connie's direction. Though, all the brunette did was stifle a laugh as she gave Julie a reassuring look. She wasn't going to embarrass her today. The girl simply just had one purpose in talking to Scooter. That was Adam Banks.

"Cool," Scooter smiled as he sat down, "I have to talk to you guys too"

Slightly alarmed, Connie suddenly furrowed her eyebrows and tilted her head at him as Julie was ready to intently listen to what he had to say

"It's about Banksy"

Saying Connie and Julie were surprised was a slight understatement as they both sent each other confused and alarmed looks before looking back at Scooter, telling him to continue on.

"I haven't known the kid for long but... I do care about him," Scooter began as he ran a hand through his hair, "I wanna look out for him like he's my litter brother... but I can't figure him out- well I mean, I sort of have but I just need information"

"Information about.." Julie trailed as she pursed her lips together in a line

In a nonchalant tone, Scooter said the name that both girls had been expecting as he leaned back on his chair comfortably. November Collins.

"Nova?" Connie started, "why do you need to know about Nova?"

Julie sent Connie a dumbfounded look as Scooter shrugged. "She's more important in Adam's life than you think.."

With a slightly offended laugh, Connie rose her eyebrows at his unintentional challenge. "I think I know how important my best friend is in Adam's life"

Curtly, Scooter shook his head with a small apologetic glance. "No, Connie..." Scooter sighed, "you don't... not even Adam does.."

"And you do?" Julie added in a matter-of-fact tone. Though, again, Scooter shook his head in an unfazed manner

"Well.." he began, "I have some thoughts"

Connie Moreau's curiosity has piqued as she leaned her head against her hand, looking at Scooter with an intrigued look. "Okay..." Connie trailed on, "tell us then"

Hesitantly, Scooter lightly bit the inside of his bottom lip before speaking. "The boy is in denial and we all know that. He tries to play off like she's nothing in to him when really, she's everything..."

Julie furrowed her eyebrows and leaned forward as she elaborated. "So are you saying he's in love with her-"

Scooter let out a sharp breath and shrugged as he shook his head. "No." He said certainly, "we don't even know if he likes her-"

"We do," Connie interrupted, causing all eyes to land on her. "Or... we did.."

"He liked her?" Julie furrowed her eyebrows together as Connie hummed a yes in response. With a configurative gaze, she looked at Scooter held a questionable look.

"What else do you think?"

Scooter held a nonchalant look as he switched his eyes between the two girls. With a simple shrug, he continued on. "He wants to get her out if his head but he doesn't at the same time..."

"How do you-"

"If he really wanted to get her out of his head, she would have been out by now..."

Connie agreed with his statement as she looked down at the table, deep in thought. She tried to pinpoint and connect all the knowledge she had about the two. Truly, it was difficult; no matter if they're her best friends. It wasn't easy when they were both this stubborn and in denial

"How exactly did you come to this conclusion?"

With a sly smile, Scooter shrugged and gave a look of obviousness. "He clearly misses her," Scooter stated, "have you seen him when someone talks about her? He looks miserable"

"He looks miserable when he says her name" Julie interjected before Scooter gave her an agreeable nod. Though, Connie slightly narrowed her eyes and looked intently as Scooters countenance in interest

"I've got a feeling like you have another suspicion"

Scooter perked up an eyebrows as he glanced toward the quite intellectual brunette freshman. "Just one.."

Connie pursed her lips together and nodded. "You know why Adam doesn't call her, dont you?"

The upperclassman nodded as Connie gave him a pointed look, telling him to go on. Though, as the girl was expecting his response to be the same as her suspicion, it wasn't. Simply, Connie Moreau was expecting Scooter to say, "he's scared that Nova is mad at him and that when he'd finally talk to her, it wouldn't be civil" except it wasn't. It wasn't even close. But after hearing it, things seemed a bit more clearer to Connie Moreau....
