Right now, I am sitting with Amelia, Bethany, Sam and Kenny to practice for our competition. Today we were all called and informed that the Inter State Math Competition was drawing nearer and there were rumours that it will be very soon.
"Ok so which topic are we going to treat first?" I ask
"Emmm they said they were asking on Quadratic Equations, Linear Equations and Simultaneous Equations for Algebra. Sum of angles in a triangle, Area and Perimeters for Geometry. Number Bases, Number Patterns, Indices and Standard Form." Sam lists
"Woah that's a lot of topics" Amelia shouts
"Yeah but it's just Quadratic Equations, Linear Equations, Simultaneous Equations, Sum of angles, Area, Perimeter, Number Bases, Number Patterns, Indices and Standard Form" I say trying to raise hope but it sounded so much as I listed them
"Asher that's still much" Kenny states
"Ok ok but let's start somewhere. So Quadratic Equations??" I ask
"Yeah" Everyone shouts except for Bethany of course
"And who made you the boss of that" Bethany said with a scowl on her face
"Nobody Bethany, let's just study. I am not in the mood for any of this" I say
"And what are you trying to say?? What am I gonna do to you?? I am just stating facts. You are not the boss of anybody" She shouts
"Bethany stop it, For God's sake let's just read" I shout
"And yeah she's shouting now. Again, you are not the boss of me" She yells
I glare at her and she looks right back at me. No one was blinking, we were looking at each other straight in the eye waiting for who will give up. The others notice the very tense atmosphere between us and decided to separate us.
"Guys please this is not the time to fight" Amelia says
"Yes please put your differences aside and study" Sam says
"You guys are smart and if you keep on getting in front of yourselves. We won't be able to win this" Kenny says
"Please" They all say at the same time
"Fine, I am sorry guys. I shouldn't have acted that way" I say
They all nod at me but Bethany didn't look remorseful. Instead she looked victorious cause I backed out of our little staring contest. Thinking she had won. Honestly, I really hated her guts but I know if we have to win. I have to put that aside.
"Bethany, truce??" I say extending my hand
She looks at my hand irritated to even touch it. But the others shoot her a warning glare, she sneers at them. And grabs the top of my hand shaking it.
"Truce" She replies
Immediately she releases her hand, she checks her bag looking for some thing. She brings out her hand sanitizer and pours it all over her hand apparently trying to get rid of me from her fingers tips. I just ignore her and begin solving questions.
"I found Quadratic Equations, Page 141 Revision Exercise 20" Amelia says
"Ok we are all going to solve them. After that, we will switch and mark each other's works. After grading them, we will help out those who aren't so good and explain it to them. That's for those who know it well" I say
"Huh" Kenny says
"If I don't understand the topic so well and you do. You explain it to me" I say
"Oooo" Kenny says
"Ok let's start" I say
"Again not my boss" Bethany murmurs
I just roll my eyes and start solving all the questions. After an hour of solving questions, we all switch and grade our works. I and Bethany got the highest, then Amelia, then Sam and Kenny. It wasn't like Kenny did horribly bad or something.
It's just that we are all smart, the lowest was 27/30. While I and Bethany got 30/30. Amelia got 29/30 and Sam got 28/30. So it's not like we did horribly bad.
"So I don't think anybody has to explain anything" I say
"But you said the highest gets to teach the person with the lower grade" Bethany says
"Yes I did but we all obviously did well. Maybe Kenny just made some mistakes here and there" I say
"Well we can't afford him making mistakes here and there at the competition" Bethany says
"I just don't think there is any need" I say
"I am sure you are just doing this because we had a draw. And you wanted to be the one to explain and prove you are all smart. Sorry to disappoint but as I said I am better than you Asher" Bethany says with a smirk
I was fuming with anger at this point, she just liked attacking me at every side. I hate it when people brag about how smart they are. So I never brag, never. If I do brag, I always go back to apologise. I feel disgusted in a way by people who brag.
"Do you know what?? Bethany you can teach Kenny. I don't insist he is all yours" I huff
I stuff my books inside my bag and turn around to leave. I hear Amelia shouting my name as I left but practice had ended. And as if my mind was read, the bell rings signifying another class. I just walk into my next class fuming.
I sit down for Geography and see Lois enter the class. She waves at me and I wave back. She sits down and begins removing her books.
"How has your day been?" Lois asks
"Mmmm fine I guess" I say remembering Bethany
"Where were you?? You weren't at lunch" She asks
"I was studying Maths for the upcoming competition" I say
"Ooo but why do you look all grumpy. You are a pro at maths or was it hard today??" Lois asks
"No it's just Bethany acting like an annoying jealous brat" I say
"Ooo I totally understand" She says with a huff
Lois hated Bethany too. On her first day at school, she mistakenly stepped on Bethany's new high heels that cost a fortune apparently. Lois apologized and Bethany acted like she was over it. Then during lunch time, she poured her youghurt all over Lois' head. So yeah they hated each other's guts now.
"Don't worry about her and concentrate on the competition. We all trust you and we know you are bringing the cup back" Lois says
"Thanks Lois and woah that's a lot of pressure. You guys shouldn't put all hopes on me. We are five not only me" I say
"I know but we all know you are the main person everyone is expecting to win" Lois says with a wink.
Before I can ask her about what she said. Our Geography teacher enters the class and asks all of us to write in a single sentence what we think of Geography. Here we go!!!!!
