"At the wheel,
we've got a million miles ahead of us,
All that we need, is a rude awakening to know we're good enough."
Let Me Love You - Justin Bieber & DJ Snake.

The vibration of my phone in my pocket almost goes unnoticed, until Kye throws me an annoyed look over his shoulder.

"Dude, your phone." He says, before turning back around to sift through the pantry, resuming his search for Cheetos. The reason why he wanted Cheetos just a few minutes before we leave for the ball is beyond me, but I don't question it.

I take out my phone, my eyes dropping to the caller ID, and my heart skips a beat, worry tingling down my spine. In one swift motion, I slide the answer button and lift the phone to my ear, walking out of the kitchen and into our backyard.

I'm met with the chilly night air wrapping around me like an icy blanket, seeping through the material of the suit I was wearing.

"Hunter," Lily's soft voice greets me.

"Lily, are you okay? What's wrong?" I ask hastily, my anxiety skyrocketing. She never calls at this time usually.

"I'm okay! I miss you loads."

I breathe a sigh of relief, watching as my breath becomes smoke in the chilly air.

"I miss you too, Lily." I reply, my eyes lifting up to the sky, which is glinting with stars. The half moon shines brightly, casting a silvery glow on everything the moonlight touches.

"Lily honey, is that Hunter?" I hear another female voice interrupt, followed by shuffling sounds.

"Hunter?" My mother's familiar voice spreads warmth throughout my body, and I close my eyes, drawing a breath.

"Mom, hey."

"Hi honey. Your sister misses you so much, she learned how to dial your number on her own through my phone."

I chuckle lightly, smiling to myself. "I miss you guys too, Mom."

"How is college, darling? Finals?" She asks her usual motherly questions, and I can hear the TV in the background. They're probably cuddled up on the couch by now, watching My Little Pony, Lily's favourite cartoon like usual.

"It's good, I'm actually about to go to the end of semester dance with the boys. I'll send you a picture of my finals results sheet tomorrow,"

"I'm sure you did amazing as usual honey, I'm so proud of you."

My heart squeezes. "Thanks Mom. How is everything at home? Have you been taking your meds?"

She sighs, but answers me nevertheless. "Yes, Hunter, I have. And everything is well, will you be coming home for Thanksgiving?"

I bite my lip, dreading her reaction to what I'm about to say. I huff out another breath before responding.

"We have our final soccer match a day before Thanksgiving break, Mom. I might have to tie some loose ends up afterwards, and prepare for next season with Coach. But I will try my best."
