Sophie clutched Ella to her chest, curling her knees to her chest under the covers.

"I don't know what to do, Keefe."

No answer. Like always.

It was several hours later. Edaline had been brought inside, and Elwin was working on helping her. Sophie had been taken out of the room by Sandor, who insisted she go to sleep, but inside, due to the attempted kidnapping.
Grady hadn't left Edaline's side.

"If Edaline doesn't survive..." her words fell off.

Sophie let out a long and shuddering breath.
She needed to think about something else. "Do you remember the day, the day you met me? You were ditching. You asked me if I was lost." A laugh escaped her lips. "I was. I was lost in so many ways. But you helped me. Even though I was the new brown eyed human girl.

"When Mr. Forkle died. You, you just held me. You comforted me, ever though you were hurting just as much as me.

(I feel like Shannon has said that in one of the books, but I can't remember if it was canon, or if I'm just mixing up all the fanfics I've read and the books and my brain. I don't know. Keep reading.)

"Then when we found out the truth, you still asked me if I was okay."

Sophie bit her trembling lips, but another sob escaped. "Then when I was unmatchable, do you remember what you told me? You said, 'You being Unmatchable doesn't matter, at least not to anyone who actually matters—'"

Sophie let them all free. The only sound in the room were her sobs.

When she finally quieted down, she turned to face the ceiling. "Whenever I feel like crying again, I go to my safe place. Riding on Sylveny with you. That's one of the only places I ever felt truly safe. I'm trying to be there right now, but you're gone and I don't if Edaline is..." she faltered. "It's just really hard to stay there."

She bit her lip.

"That's my safe place, you know. My happy place. A happy memory."

"We don't have very many happy memories. Because we all got wrapped up in this. When you get back, we'll make our own happy memories. We'll pull pranks on Magnate Leto, just for you. And, and you'll draw more amazing pictures. And all of us, we'll all have sleepovers. We'll be normal teenagers for once." She sucked in a sob. "Normal teenagers."

The despair washed over her. Her eyes shut, painfully tight.

"Look, Keefe. I need you still. But... I know you can't hear me, so... after tonight, I'm stopping. I'm done. I can't do this every night. I don't even know if you're alive still. Edaline and Grady need me right now, and I need to focus on the Neverseen, so... I guess you're getting what you wanted."

A final tear trickled down her cheek, and she released the last hope that she would ever see Keefe Sencen again.

A/N: okay, I'm going to be honest, it hurt writing that last sentence. I am looking forward to reuniting Team Foster-Keefe, though! Look forward to more angst... I'm so sorry, in advance. I don't think it will make you cry, but I cried while writing some of these, just because I had to get myself in the mood, lol. So... yeah. Hope you enjoyed!
