Summary: Marcus and Courtney (his late wife's best friend and fellow Heroic) get into an argument and it leads to a bombshell being dropped.

"Night Courtney!" Missy said, kissing her cheek.
"I want lights out by ten. It's a school night. Do you understand, young lady?" Marcus told her.
Missy rolled her eyes. "Yes, dad." She kissed him on the cheek and went up the stairs.
"Night kiddo!"
The two adults heard her door shut.
"Hey, thanks again for picking her up," Marcus told Courtney.
"It's no problem, Marcus. I like hanging out with Missy."
"So...there's a reason I asked you over tonight."
Courtney took a sip of her wine. "Oh? And here I just thought you enjoyed my company."
He put a hand on her leg. "I wanted to talk to you about something."
Courtney's heartbeat picked up, but it came to a screeching halt when Marcus spoke again.
"I'm thinking of letting Missy come with me on a mission soon."
"What? No! No! Absolutely not!"
Marcus sighed. "Court, I promised her."
"I don't care what you promised her!"
"Courtney, the kids proved they could do what it takes. They stopped a full scale alien invasion."
"She's a child! No. I am putting my foot down. End of discussion." Courtney got up and started grabbing her things.
"I don't know why you're being this way."
"Really, Marcus? No idea?"
Was he really that stupid? Could he not see how much she cared for him and his daughter?
"I wouldn't have told you if I knew you'd react like this. You're supposed to be my best friend and have my back."
"I always have your back, Marcus and you know it!"
"You're not her mother, so quit acting like it!"
Courtney felt her heart break with those words and Marcus regretted them as soon as he said them. He knew Missy saw Courtney as a mother figure.
"I see. Well I'm sorry if I overstepped my boundaries. Goodnight, Marcus." Courtney started for the door.
"Courtney, wait. I'm sorry."
She stopped with her hand on the knob. "You know, maybe if you had picked me that day none of this would have happened. I'm not blaming you for her death, but sometimes...sometimes I wished it was me. Maybe then Missy would still have her mother."
With that she walked out.
Away from him.
Marcus heard sniffles from behind him and saw Missy standing at the top of the stairs. "Oh honey." He bounded up the stairs and gathered his daughter in his arms. "You shouldn't have heard any of that."
"You should go after her."
"I will in the morning. Now, it's time for bed."
The next morning, Courtney woke up to someone knocking on her door. She got up and answered it, already knowing who it was. She was still wearing the clothes from the night before having cried herself to sleep.
"Hey, I brought you breakfast. It's from your favorite bagel place."
Courtney silently let him into her apartment and into the kitchen.
Marcus set the bag and the coffee in front of her.
"Aren't you gonna eat something?" she asked him.
"Um, no. I had breakfast with Missy, then dropped her off at school."
"Oh." Courtney quietly ate her bagel as Marcus tried to find the words to apologize.
"Did you mean what you said last night?" Marcus asked.
"Drunk lips speak sober thoughts."
Marcus set his elbows on the counter and put his head in his hands. "Do you...do you know what I would've done if I had lost you? If you had...?" He couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.
"Marcus..." Courtney tried to gather the courage for her next confession. "I remember the day we saw you. You looked so good in that old leather jacket. I remembered thinking that you had the most beautiful and warm eyes I'd ever seen. But then I looked at her and she was looking at you like you hung the stars in the sky. She turned to me and told me she wanted to marry you. She was too scared to walk over, so I did it instead. You could've been mine."
Courtney's eyes filled with tears. "Marcus, I stepped aside and let her have you. The day you lost your wife, I lost a best friend. No, she was closer than that. She was a sister. I have regretted that day ever since. I knew something bad was going to happen, but I thought I was just being paranoid."
"What are you saying?"
"You know."
"Please, say it."
"I love you Marcus. I always did and always will."
Marcus reached across the counter and the bar and cupped her cheek. "I love you, Courtney. I've tried to push these feelings away. I didn't want to confuse Missy. You were her mother's best friend. You were her aunt, but since her mother passed away I know she's nudged you into the mother role."
"God, we've both been so stupid."
Marcus laughed. "Yeah, we have. Is that you never dated anyone?"
"I knew that I'd never find anyone I loved more than you."
Marcus walked around so now he was standing right in front of Courtney. "Can I kiss you?"
Courtney quirked an eyebrow at him. "Bold of you to assume you have to ask."
Marcus laughed and pressed his lips to hers finally.
The moment Marcus' lips met hers, Courtney felt complete.
