That Would Be Enough (Marcus Moreno)

Summary: Marcus is injured on a mission and Courtney has keep herself together for everyone else.

"Marcus, come in," Courtney said over her comm. When there was no answer, Courtney started to panic.

"He's about 1 click northwest of you," the Support team said.

Courtney nodded and ran in that direction. When she found Marcus, the enemy was leaning over him.

Marcus was bloody and beaten.

Courtney wasn't sure if Marcus was alive or not, but the katanas lying a few feet away from his hand moved.

Marcus was trying to summon them, but he didn't have enough energy to.

The enemy noticed this and went for the killing blow, but Courtney stopped them with an energy blast. Courtney rushed to Marcus' side and gently put her hands on his face. "Marcus, hey. Can you hear me? Come on."

Marcus groaned.

"Just stay awake for me. Can you do that?"

Marcus was mumbling something.

Courtney's heart dropped when she realized it was his late wife's name.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I couldn't keep you safe," he spoke.

Courtney hushed him. "Help's on it's way. Just stay awake for me."

Help finally arrived and Marcus was rushed to the infirmary at Heroics HQ.

"Someone needs to tell Anita and get her here as quickly as possible," Courtney said.

The leader of the support team nodded.

"I'll go get Missy." Courtney changed out of her Heroic's uniform and went to Missy's school. Courtney walked to the office and said, "I'm here to pick up Missy Moreno."

"Are you her mother?"

"No, but I...I'm on her pick-up list." She gave the receptionist her name and sat down to wait for Missy.

"Courtney!" Missy squealed, seeing her father's fellow Heroic.

"Hey kiddo."

"Where's dad?"

"Missy..."

Missy's eyes filled with tears. "Is he...?"

Courtney quickly shook her head and hugged the young girl. "No. No, he's just injured pretty badly."

Courtney wanted to cry too, but she had to hold it together for Missy. "Come on. They've already told your abuela. She's probably waiting for us."

When they got back to HQ, Anita was waiting for them.

Missy threw her arms around her grandmother and started crying.

"Shhh, nieta. Your father is okay. A little beat up, but he'll be good as new in no time."

They stepped into the room and saw Marcus lying there on the bed. They had cleaned him up, but he had bruises all over his face and a broken nose. His lip was split right in the middle and he had a large cut on his cheek.

"He's on heavy painkillers, so he'll sleep for a while," Anita told them.

Missy walked over to her father and took his larger hand in hers.

"Excuse me," Courtney said, leaving the room. Tears rolled down her face.

"I'm surprised you've kept it together this long."

Courtney gasped and turned to see Anita. "Anita!" Courtney wiped at her cheeks.

"You don't have to hide your tears from me. I know your feelings for my son."

"He thought I was her. He kept saying her name. I know he still loves her, but..."

He still wore his wedding ring, despite her being gone for years now.

"It doesn't make it hurt any less. One of these days he'll realize you love him."

"And then what?"

"If you need answer to that, you're not as smart as I thought you were."

Courtney's mouth dropped open as Anita walked back into the room.

Long after Anita and Missy had gone home, Marcus woke up.

He groaned and Courtney sat up. Marcus tried to move and Courtney gently placed a hand on his chest.

"Hey, it's okay. You're back at HQ."

Marcus opened his eyes.

"There you are."

Marcus opened his mouth to say something, but started coughing.

Courtney grabbed a cup and poured him some water. She helped him take a few sips before she placed it on the side table.

"Thank you," Marcus croaked.

She wasn't sure what he was thanking her for. "You don't have to thank me, Marcus."

Marcus smiled. "Still. I swear you're my own personal angel."

Even though it broke Courtney's heart being in love with a man who didn't love her back, as long as Marcus smiled at her it would be enough.
