Summary: Marie goes to the pool like she does when she has the day off and meets a new lifeguard on duty.

Marie set her stuff down on a pool chair and slipped out of her cover-up. Her swimsuit was plain with black lace ruffles. Not too revealing, but not boring either.

She jumped in the pool and shivered at the temperature of the water. Once she adjusted, she started swimming laps. Marie wasn't a professional swimmer by any stretch of the word, but she'd been swimming since she was a little girl. As she swam across the pool, she caught a glimpse of the lifeguard on duty.

He had olive skin with dark hair. He had the life-preserver draped across his lap and he was significantly older than the other lifeguards. By the foot of his chair was a small boy wearing green swimming trunks. His small feet were dangling in the water and he was playing with a couple of pool toys shaped like frogs.

Marie waved at him as she swam by and he gave her a smile. Once Marie felt like she'd gotten enough exercise in, she floated on her back and swam around casually. After a while, she started to feel hungry so she climbed out of the water and walked over to her bag to grab her wallet. She walked to the concession stand that was right by the kiddy pool. She ordered herself some chips and a water and sat down at a table. That's when she spotted the lifeguard and the little boy playing in the shallow water.

The little boy must be his son, going by the way the man was smiling at him.

Marie watched the two of them playing until another lifeguard entered the kiddy pool.

"Djarin, you're up!" he said.

The man rolled his eyes and stood up. "C'mon Garret."

The little boy, Garret, shook his head. "I'm sorry adi'ka, but it's time for buir to go back to work."

Garret's big brown eyes welled up with tears before he let out a large wail.

"Shit," the man cursed. He wrapped his large arms around his son. "C'mon, adi'ka. It'll be okay. We'll come back."

Marie rushed to the concession counter and ordered a popsicle. She carried it into the kiddy pool area. "Big boys don't cry when they don't get their way," she said.

Garret looked at her and his eyes zeroed in on the popsicle.

"Do you want this?" Marie asked.

Garret nodded. "Only if you promise to be good for your...um, buir." Marie's cheeks burned with embarrassment as she tried to pronounce the foreign word.

Garret wiped his eyes and took the popsicle from Marie.

"Thank you," the man said, "I'm...still getting used to this."

"I have nieces and nephews, so I know how to handle a crying child. I can watch him if you want me to."

"You...you would do that?"

Marie nodded. "Yeah, he's adorable and he clearly loves the water."

"Um, thanks. I'm Din."

"Marie."

Din knelt down in front of Garret. "Be good for Miss Marie, okay adi'ka?" He kissed his son's head and headed back out to the main pool area.

After Garret had finished his popsicle, Marie sat with him in the shallow end of the kiddy pool and played with his frogs.

"Are frogs your favorite animal?" Marie asked.

Garret nodded.

Marie and Garret played around in the water for about an hour. When Garret needed something, he would tug on her arm or point. Marie found it odd that she hadn't heard Garret speak.

"He's non-verbal," Din said, suddenly appearing and answering her unasked question, "I don't know why. I've taken him to specialists and there's nothing wrong with him."

"How long have you had him?" Marie asked.

"About 7 months."

"Well maybe he'll talk when he feels comfortable enough."

Garret spotted his father and ran over to him with a smile on his face.

"Hello adi'ka!" Din said, planting kisses all over his small face. Garret giggled.

"What does that mean? That name you call him?" Marie asked.

Din blushed. Most people just brushed off the odd words that came out of his mouth. They very rarely wanted to know what it meant. "Oh, it means 'little-one' or 'child' in my native language."

"It's cute. It suits him."

"Well, my shift ended about 20 minutes ago."

"Oh..."

"Can I take you to dinner? As a way to say thank you for watching him?"

Marie gave him a shy smile and nodded.
